A pair of Texans decided to make fun of New Orleans receiver Joe Horn during Sunday's game against the Titans. Apparently the NFL is not amused.

Texans general manager Charley Casserly has been informed by the league that quarterback David Carr and center Steve McKinney will be fined for mocking the routine that cost Horn $30,000, the Houston Chronicle reported Thursday. The report did not specify the amount of the fines.

In the third quarter against the Titans, Carr scrambled right and hit Corey Bradford for a 20-yard touchdown strike. Carr and McKinney inspected the padding around the goal post, pretending to look for a cell phone like the one Joe Horn used to make an end zone call on Dec. 14 in a rout of the Giants.

There was no phone, and Carr waved his hand below his chin, as if to tell the crowd the Texans didn't practice such stunts. It appeared to be all in fun -- until the league responded.

"That's the league being the league," McKinney told the Chronicle on Wednesday. "We'll appeal it and probably get our money back. If we do have to pay, I think David should have to pay. I was just an innocent bystander. We were just having fun. I don't really care. It was still fun. You have to spice things up every now and then."

"We were just having some fun," Carr told the newspaper. "We weren't trying to hurt anyone's feelings."

    steve mckinney is hilarious!

what a joke...but i knew they'd get fined, as soon as they did it. the nfl fines virtually everything. some guy peed without lifting the seat at reliant last week, and the nfl fined him on the way out of the bathroom.

He should have his own show. The guy has such a dry sense of humor. I love it when he's on 610.

    Carr, McKinney fined $5,000

    By JOSEPH DUARTE
    Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle

The NFL gave Texans quarterback David Carr and center Steve McKinney belated Christmas presents Friday -- $5,000 fines for spoofing New Orleans receiver Joe Horn's cell-phone call in the end zone during Sunday's game against Tennessee at Reliant Stadium.

"It's not a big deal," Carr said. "(The league) basically said we shouldn't do it again."

After Carr's third-quarter touchdown pass to Corey Bradford, McKinney raced to the goal post and acted like he was searching the padding. There was no phone, and Carr waved his hand below his chin to signal to fans that there would be no repeat of Horn's antics.

McKinney said he and Carr came up with the idea in the huddle just before the TD.

In a letter from the league this week, the explanation for the fines was that the celebration was premeditated, Carr said. Both players plan to appeal.

Horn was fined $30,000 by the NFL for making an end-zone call Dec. 14 after teammate Michael Lewis handed him a phone that had been stashed under the goal post padding.

The NFL has been cracking down on prop-oriented celebrations, beginning last season when San Francisco receiver Terrell Owens took out a Sharpie pen and signed a ball after a touchdown. Two weeks ago, Cincinnati receiver Chad Johnson held up a handmade sign after a touchdown that read: "Dear NFL: Please don't fine me again." He was fined $10,000.

the nfl is straight up lame. they want to provide entertainment and gain veiwers but when a player contributes to more interest in the league, they fine them instead of paying them for free advertisement.

I was just reading through that article.. they came up with the td celebration in the huddle right before the touchdown?

I know it's not a big deal but it seems to me they should be discussing the play not the td dance in the huddle lol

If I was David Carr I'd embarass the crap out of the NFL right now. This is the chance for the fun bunchers to make a point and challenge the system. Nobody will agree with this fine in my opinion. And yet nobody gets fined for the Lambeau leap, that impromptu, whimsical, unthought of, display of affection. It's a double standard.

A lot of teams other than the Packers (including the Texans) jump into the seats after scoring. There's no double standard involved.

I think anytime you involve the fans in a non-taunting way, you're not going to get fined. No one ever gets fined for giving away footballs, unless they still charge the players for the footballs like they used to do in the past.

To be honest, I didn't like the display at all if they were doing it to mock Horn instead of the NFL. Once you make fun of a fellow player in a public way like that, it makes you no better than that player (even though I really had no problem with what Horn did). However, if they were making fun of the NFL for fining Horn, then I'm down with that.

If a Texan Lambeau leaps at Lambeau he'll get a fine for taunting and 15 yards. If a Packer Leaps nothing will happen. I can see the fairness clearly now. If that isn't the worst kind of taunting I don't know what is. As a fan I love it. But it's still taunting if one team can do it but the other can't. A double standard if you will.

That being said I have no answer to what the NFL really wants to curb, which is fighting. Suspensions of 5 games for fighting hurt the league too much. You can't suspend Warren Sapp for 5 games. So there's no good answer. but if you take out the good stuff from the game to negate the small amount of bad are you really helping? I think you need to focus on the bad.

It's a lot like if a hot girl walk into a classroom. The guys get rowdy. Do you punish the hot girl because she's hot. and ban her from the classroom. Thus preventing the problem. Or do you punish the guys who get rowdy after it's too late.
