Mike Sherman. I have a pretty good source within TAMU athletics that tells me that this is the direction that Bill Byrne is leaning. Not etched in stone, but a very good possibility. He also tells me that if Sherman comes to A&M, he'll be bringing Johnny Holland with him to coach our defense. Take it for what it's worth...
We might just get our wish. Seriously! Cross fingers and pary to Papa Noel. I don't care who the Aggies hire.
We've been hearing Sherman since the Miami loss. I was hoping we would make a run at some other names after the season. Oh well. Coaching the Packers is a pretty sexy unique draw in the conference. But that didn't do $#@$ for Callahan.
Then why are you in the Aggie thread? Go pretend to not care about losing to A&M in another thread, please.
I think it will be Sherman as well. The question is...will he be an improvement over Fran, or even RC Slocum?
I was surprised they ever got rid of RC. Seemed like the perfect Aggie coach. Felt the same about Spike Dykes and TT.
RC was a good coach, but the consensus was that he wasn't going to get A&M to the next level. We dropped the ball there thinking that Francakes would get us to the next level. I'll admit that I was one of many Aggie fans who were excited to have Fran, and that's why I'll withhold judgment on our new coach, whoever he may be. Franchione was the popular choice, but he was obviously the wrong choice. The popular choices now seem to be Jeff Tedford, Tommy Tuberville, etc. I trust Bill Byrne's judgment. So far, he has a good record at A&M of hiring coaches (Rob Childress, Billy C. Gillespie, etc.). Hopefully Byrne will find another coach that is successful here.
Paul Finebaum out of Birmingham, AL has been reporting since November 5 that it appears that TAMU will hire Tommy Tuberville. Not sure of the accuracy, but he has interviewed several sportwriters in Alabama who believe that Tubby is College Station bound.
All the inside sources at A&M are reporting Sherman, so unfortunately I think that guy is wrong. Or TT is trying to use the situation to get something from Auburn .
hmmm.... i guess everyone else has the same source since every station/paper/player/announcer has been saying the thing since yesterday.
I've actually heard Tuberville and Pelini more from the media than I have Sherman. However, it wouldn't surprise me if more people have been reporting the same. Unless you are a high dollar alum or Bill Byrne (my guy is neither), you can't speak with certainty. I could very well be wrong. However, the guy I am referring to has been spot on with respect to A&M coaching hires before, so I trust his word.
The majority of people appear to be reporting Tuberville and honestly, I think Tuberville makes more sense than Sherman. Both have ties to A&M, but Tuberville is known to be unhappy at Auburn and he has much more experience in the college game. If it does end up being Tuberville, I hope he brings Will Muschamp with him to coach the defense. Ideally, I would love to see Muschamp get the HC job at A&M.
Sherman just doesn't seem like a great pick. Then again, I thought Franchione was an awesome selection, but I was obviously wrong about that!
At the time of his hire, Franchione seemed like a perfect fit at A&M. He'd had success in Texas, had turned around a couple of programs, etc. He turned out not to be as smart as thought, but it seemed like a great move at the time. Though if he let his offense play like yesterday and his defense play like vs. UT last year more often, things might have been different. That said, I think Tedford has said in the past that he's not even willing to consider moving until his daughter graduates high school or something. I do think he'd be a great, creative offensive coach. Tuberville (or my favorite, Chris Peterson) would also be great. I think Mike Sherman would be a disappointment - just kind of a ho-hum guy. Some success in the pros, but both his predecessor and successor at Green Bay have had more success than he did. That's not a good sign. Then again, Pete Carroll was a terrible NFL coach. But I think you need to find a great recruiter to break into the UT/LSU/OU trio in the recruiting area and someone to bring some excitement/life to the program. Sherman just doesn't seem that guy.
