or or or Assuming that Biggio and/or Bagwell aren't going to be considered I would love Duncan and if reports are right about him being just pissed off enough to leave Larussa then the Stros should make that call and see if there is any interest. Jimmy D would be my second choice and after listening to him over the years I am convinced the guy knows pitching but the question will be can he handle all aspects of managing.
Willie Randolph? The guy who actually had a super-talented team that sucked? Manny Acta? I guess he has experience with managing sucky teams. I go with the MadMax philosophy. JD would be interesting as well.
HUH? Didn't Randolph lead the Mets to within 1 game of the World Series? The collapse wasn't all his problem as they pulled the same junk the following year under Manual. Plus if people think Coop got a raw deal just read how Randolph was let go. Acta is long time Astro favorite and his name has been mentioned the most so his is just a logical option. Saying that Duncan or JD in my book!
Yeah - to me, with a team like the Astros that are probably going to suck next year anyway, we should be looking for the next LaRussa or Bobby Cox or what not - and if we get a dud, who cares? Randolph certainly had some success with the Mets, as well as some failure. At the end of the day, his teams performed about as expected or a little under - he had probably the most talented team in the league and had mixed results. Manny Acta had a wretched team and produced a wretched record - similar to Cooper in my mind (mediocre team, mediocre record). Neither did anything special with their teams (like winning a WS for the Mets or making the Nationals mediocre instead of wretched). I'd rather try something new and see if we strike gold - as you said, Duncan or JD.
On the flipside, I was pissed when we hired our last re-tread manager who had failed everywhere he'd been. The Phil Garner experiment turned out pretty good, so who knows!
Well my idea is really outside the box, but I'll just put it out there cause no one seems to have thought of it. But I think Dave Duncan might be a fit.
How will we know if the manager is a success? The team will not be good, so how do we judge? Looking strictly at W-L, Cooper actually did well considerig the talent on the team, but I assume they really fired him over clubhouse issues.
that's a great idea. props to you for thinking of it. as for me and my family...we're hoping for dave duncan.
i'm not entirely sure. but i really want dave duncan to be the 'stros next manager. that i know for sure.
I'd like for them to at least gauge Brad Ausmus' interest in retiring and becoming manager. Beyond that, I'd be happy with Manny Acta, Tim Bogar, or Dave Duncan. That said, I have a bad feeling we'll be hearing a Drayton McClane presser start off with "Please welcome the next manager of the Houston Astros, Jim Fregosi."
