Will Texans flip for this new coin? Lone Star quarter is, well, just that By JANETTE RODRIGUES Copyright 2002 Houston Chronicle Arlington artist Daniel Miller tried bluebonnets, the Alamo and even a horned toad, but nothing says Lone Star State like the symbols he put on his winning Texas quarter design. At least that's what a state committee that chose the design for the Texas coin thinks. No disrespect to the Alamo, but the design the state will send to the U.S. Mint for consideration features a lone star semi-imposed over a relief map of Texas. A lariat borders the edge of the coin. "I went for a simple design because I noticed a lot of the other state quarters looked cluttered," said Miller, looking on proudly as his work was unveiled Friday in Houston. The simple, yet eye-catching design, was revealed during a ceremony attended by Gov. Rick Perry at the Federal Reserve Bank branch downtown. The artwork may be featured on one side of the Texas quarter to be issued in 2004 if it passes muster with the Mint. But the buck -- er, quarter -- stops with Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill. He has final approval over the design. The 15-member state coin design committee reviewed more than 2,700 designs. Miller's design drew "oohs" and "aahs" of delight from many gathered for the unveiling. --------------------------- click for entire article from chron.com
I know the Alamo is always associated with texas... but i'd rather put something from a battle we WON Come on San Jacinto monument I can see them making fun of us on all the national shows... doesn't texas know they lost at the alamo?
I dont like it. I would rather have something like the alamo or even a spaceship or even a cattle with a like a bull or something like that.
yeah, i dont like it. maybe a cow giving birth would have been funnER. but seriously all of the other quarters are pretty detailed and ours is pretty BLAH. they should have put: "DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS"
