Pistol Pete did some amazing things but he wasn't as fun to watch as you might think. I'll say this, when he had it going he definitely knew how to put on a show.

I remember watching on ESPN a few years ago of a documentary about Pistol Pete.. Oh my my my.. that was the first time I got to see his highlights and he was just as flashy but much more creative, graceful than Jason Williams.. only 20+ years ahead.. I was blown away. There were some TRULY AMAZING, UNBELIEVABLE highlights I remember, but from searching on the web I couldn't find those same clips anymore.. Those floating around on the net I think are not that great.

Maybe some of you know the ESPN program i'm talking about?

I figured the Ralph Sampson shot to put us in the finals would be there in the Clutch list but it wasn't...sucks..guess it was more luck then clutch.

I hate to say it, but that Hakeem move on Robinson (as cool as it is) would probably be called a travel in today's league.

Chapman's shot was luck too. I figured one of Horry's big shots would be there too. And what about T-Mac's 13-point miracle? I guess there are just too many clutch shots to select from. But Sampson's shot should have been there. It's one of the most famous shots in NBA history.

Also, I thought Bird's rebound and put back of his own miss behind the backboard would be there in the top 10 moves. Anyone remember that?

Your description understates how awesome that play was. He flipped it into the basket, underhand, with his LEFT hand. The skill level required on a shot like that is just ridiculous. And with Bird, it wasn't just a fluke. He was simply that good.

How do you figure when never lifts his pivot foot until he shoots.

one of the pistol pete moves was clearly a carrying. He passed the ball to himself behind the back. If the ball comes up from a dribble, is touched by both hands, then dribbled again, that is a carrying. I love pistol, but it was clearly a travel

Look at how many steps he takes before he establishes his pivot foot.

yeah, but what makes you think that would be called a travel in today's nba? new rules are never going to take those travels away. good players making good moves aren't going to be stopped because they may have taken 3 steps, especially when it's hard to pinpoint exactly when they regained possession on the dribble and on what step to start counting. it's just not the nba way. it's the shuffle the feet before driving travels that they look for a lot right now.

Sounded like a little Bill Worrell, talking about "fanger roll" haha.

I'd have to agree the Hakeem play might be called traveling today. There was traveling suspicions even when I saw it happen. His footwork was so quick and nimble its hard to spot in real time so in that regard they might not catch it today. They call travels today more at the beginning of the dribble instead at the end or when shooting but I'd say...25% more chance.

In the old days the players would contort and twist their arms to any angle to get the ball in the basket. Some would bring the ball way high over their head, shoot set shots, do an overhead scoop with the left hand off the glass back to the basket while standing on the ground like Bob Cousy did in the highlight, sweeping hooks, shoot free throws underhanded, whatever. Players today all have close to the same shooting motion. Maybe its because everyone's very athletic now in the league but stuff you see now that's a highlight is starting to look too similar to plays we've seen already. I like the old shooting a scoop shoot finger roll off the wrong leg now and then I guess.

Seems to me all travels are being called a lot tighter now.

He did travel. He takes one step after he picks up the ball and then executes a one two stop; which means that he stepped and established a pivot foot then stepped again with his other foot before he began to pivot.

The move would have been legal if he had not taken that one extra step.
