Post your list of pop singers who have underrated voices. You don't even have to like the music.

    1. A-Ha - I don't even really like the band, but the singer has a crazy range on his voice. From the lowest note starting on "Take..." in the Take On Me chorus to the high note at the end is really impressive. Few other pop singers could manage that.

    2. Michael Jackson(from the Jackson 5 years) - That kid could really belt it.

    3. Jimmy Sommerville - Lead singer of Bronski Beat. He had a crazy voice but doesn't receive a lot of talk.

Folks like Mariah Carey might have a better voice, but they get their hype. I'm interested to know who folks thing deserves more attention for their voice.

Michael Jackson doesn't get his hype? Maybe his star power has fallen off but he still gets his props from many people including me.

I think Michael Jackson gets hype as a dancer, performer, etc. Most of that comes from his later recordings. I don't think his voice from Jackson 5 Years gets all that much hype.

I can't remember his name but the lead singer for Alphaville was one that I always thought had a good voice.

And even though he is more rock, his band did do some pop - Lou Gramm always had a voice that I enjoyed listening to.

Doug Pinnick - not really "pop" but an underrated talent nonetheless.

Reaching back aways, but Dennis DeYoung has CRAZY vocal range. And I saw him sing 'Come Sail Away' on Celebrity Duets recently (don't laugh: I'm married, I gave up the remote control a looong time ago) and he sounds EXACTLY the same.

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority.

In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as, uh, anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your ass. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and, uh, Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
