Maxim made a list of the top 10 sports teams whose names are quite unfitting with their cities and I can't say I'm surprised by who tops that list... It looks like we're not the only ones who have a problem with the Jazz! I found this article pretty funny but they left out some obvious choices, such as the Washington Wizards. http://www.maxim.com/Inappropriatelynamedsportsteams/articles/24346.aspx?src=news:feature2
don't they have a big air force base or something in oklahoma? why was seattle called the supersonics?
Boeing. In any case, Bennett has said that if/when he moves the team to OKC, he is going to leave the name and the "franchise history" behind. They are going to pick a new name.
BTW, I'm not really sure Boeing is the real reason, haha, but it seems like a good guess... I think there's a lot of aeronautical engineering in Seattle.
I still think that it was incredible foresight that led the original owners to name the team the San Diego Rockets. It became incredibly appropriate just a few years later.
uh, it's not a guess. it's the reason why the Sonics are called the Sonics.. wiki The Boeing 2707 was developed as the first American supersonic transport (SST). After winning a competition for a government-funded contract to build an American SST, Boeing began development at its facilities in Seattle, Washington. Named the SuperSonics after Boeing's recently awarded contract for the SST project (later canceled), they were Seattle's first major league sports franchise.
The most inappropriately named sports franchise is the Oklahoma City Sonics. There should never be an NBA team in OKC. THREAD OVER.
why not? i went to a hornets game there, and their crowd is more into it that our crowd here in Houston....
Boeing is one of the largest employers here in Seattle, up there with Microsoft. 41 years ago they would have been the largest employer by far. Makes complete sense. Kind of like the Houston Oilers.
I'm sure you know this but the Rockets of San Diego got there name by a public vote. People were crazy for space in the 60's. But yeah, kismet, think if they would've moved to Atlanta.
What the hell do Grizzlies have to do with Memphis? I mean are they really that lazy to change their name after moving from Van?
Not to D&Derail this, but they probably need to go ahead and rename those 'Indian' teams; we're used to it, but man, those are pretty damn bad when you think about it for even one second. "Redskins?" jeez louise. That Cleveland Indian logo is amazingly awful. To me, for whatever reason, Braves and Chiefs are not as bad because you can potentially spin them a different way, but if we're being honest, you might as well rename them too.
