Gag Heisman Campaign Takes Life Of Its Own

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It started out as a gag, a group of college kids promoting a bench-warming Ohio State defensive back with a funny name for the most prestigious honor in college football.

Now the campaign for Richard McNutt as a Heisman Trophy candidate has taken on a life of its own.

In August, a tongue-in-cheek Web site had 40,000 hits. More than 100 T-shirts have been sold with "McNutt For Heisman" on the front. On the back, McNutt's head has been superimposed over that of the famous ball-carrier on the trophy. The Ohio State schedule is dubbed, "The 2002 McNutt World Tour."

"It's really blown up now," said Steve Jahn, an Ohio State senior.

Jahn is sitting on a couch on his front porch, a mile or so away from Ohio Stadium. A nondescript dog, MacGyver, is on a leash nearby. There's a barbecue grill by the front door of the three-story brick home, along with a mismatched loveseat, table and chair.

It doesn't look like a campaign headquarters. Beer bottles are strewn around the yard next door.

While Jahn explains the germination of the campaign, cars honk as they pass the "McNutt For Heisman" sign hanging from the top of the house. The telephone rings and a roommate tells him that a local TV station will be featuring McNutt's fledgling campaign on its noon news.

Jahn said he's learned something about human nature from what has transpired.

"Something simple can turn into something huge," he said.

I'm in Columbus and was at the OSU game on Saturday and just heard about it then. Seems like a lot of people are talking about it here in town.
Guess he's a real nice kid who just made a good impression on someone.
But hey I give the guys credit who started it, not bad PR for a very average player!
