This might explain the look on his face at the lottery drawing. Too bad!

Curry wants to be in top 3

Thornwood star hopes to be gone when Bulls pick

Jerry Krause became such a fixture at Eddy Curry's Thornwood High School games last season that the 18-year-old Harvey native practically included finding the Bulls' general manager in the stands with his pregame routine.

"I expected to see him up there every now and then," Curry said. "I'd be like, 'Where is he? He's not here yet.'"

Whether Krause's diligence results in Curry staying close to home and joining the center-starved Bulls will have to wait until the June 27 NBA draft. That's when the Bulls, barring a trade, own the fourth overall selection plus the first pick in the second round.

But Curry, while acknowledging a fondness for the Bulls' staff, is just as forthcoming about his desire to be long gone by the time Krause decides whom to select.

"I really don't want to be around at that point," Curry said.

"Hopefully I'll be in that top two or three. Nobody from high school has ever been the No. 1 pick. Eventually somebody's going to do it. I want to be the first one. And to be drafted by Michael Jordan, that would mean a lot."

Jordan's Wizards are the only team for which Curry has had an individual workout, although he will visit the Bulls later this week.

"Still, I'd be satisfied playing for Chicago," Curry said. "A positive is I would get a lot of support. A negative is it'd be a lot of added pressure on me. But I don't think it's anything I can't handle."

The Los Angeles Clippers own the second pick. Close friends and fellow Chicago natives Quentin Richardson and Corey Maggette play there, as well as East St. Louis' Darius Miles, who also made the jump from high school to the pros.

Curry is working out with Jordan's trainer, Tim Grover. Curry's weight has dropped from 310 to 285 pounds, and his body fat is down to 13 percent.

At the conclusion of the NBA's predraft camp, Curry spoke Saturday at a downtown hotel along with several other top prospects likely to be lottery picks. Kwame Brown of Georgia and DeSagana Diop of Senegal were the other high schoolers on hand. Brown will work out for the Bulls on Wednesday.

The flip side of this youth movement is Duke graduate Shane Battier, the national player of the year, who already has worked out for the Bulls.

"The younger guys are like IPOs," Battier said. "The potential for greatness is there, but there's a chance they may dissolve.

"Then there are the blue-chip stocks. You know they're going to improve steadily year after year. Call me Proctor and Gamble then.

"No, wait, that's a little dry for me. Call me General Motors."

Layups: League personnel types most often mentioned DePaul center Steven Hunter, St. John's point guard Omar Cook and Indiana forward Kirk Haston as players who have improved their draft standing. … Several general managers said the beginning of the free-agent signing period is expected to move from Aug. 1 to July 18. Teams can begin negotiating with free agents July 1.

    You missed part:

"Still, I'd be satisfied playing for Chicago," Curry said. "A positive is I would get a lot of support. A negative is it'd be a lot of added pressure on me. But I don't think it's anything I can't handle."

My point was that he should be gone before the #4 pick.

And if you know anything about Krause, it's that he doesn't telegraph his picks. If everyone thinks it's Curry, then Krause has his eye on someone else.

So you're saying that Krause had his eye on Fizer, instead of Miles, all along & that he would spend a whole year focusing on one player in order to throw everyone off of his real focus? [IMG]

Get a life dude, Krause didn't spend the whole season scouting Miles. He spent the whole of the previous college season scouting Chris Mihm.

Krause was wanted Darius Miles so bad he would have gone so far as eat my wife's cooking, even her "secret casserole" to get him.

As it was .... Orlando, the Clips and a couple other backroom moves spoiled it all for him.

But make no mistake it was Darius Miles he wanted.

    { Anybody want to come to supper???? Please help me eat this casserole thingee!!!!!!!!!! }

You're right---but no one saw him scouting Miles. Everyone thought he was in love with Mihm till draft time came.

No, after Mihm was abused by Magloire in their private workout Krausie wasn't as high on him. Krausie got royally screwed by the Clipps and his ego is so big that he drafted Fizer just to block the arranged trade between Orlando and LA. Fizer was a real bad pick IMO. He doesn't fit on that team. You would have been much better off with Mike Miller. Well, at least Fizer has some trade value.

Krause needs to get a life and quit trying to be a scout.
