Personally, I think that McNabb is a really good QB. One of the better in football today. During tonight's NFC title telecast, one of the announcers said that "if they win today, the legend of McNabb will grow." Is he a legend? Do you all think Unitas, Montana, Elway, McNabb? Please discuss.
National announcers are known for hyperbole. If McNabb wins the Superbowl, it add to Rush Limbaugh's dubious "legend".
Kind of like Kobe or even Tim Duncan being named to the 50 all-time greatest NBA players after about five years in the league. People have short memories and tend to live in the moment but if Timmy or Kobe wouldv'e had a career ender at the moment they were named to the list their placement their would be unwarranted. And Mcnabb has no legend in my mind as of yet.
I think you need a ring as a QB along with HOF stats if you want to be considered a legend. Theres some exceptions like Marino. A superbowl win will bump up marginal guys like Steve Young. If Donovan does what hes doing for another 5-6 years, he wont be a legend because he dosent put up gawdy stats. But he will get a superbowl in that window of time. So he will be a legend soon but it wont happen this year. Hes playing terible though hes playing hurt and his teammates are playing awful.
Unitas was 3-1 in championship games and 1-0 in Super Bowls (Super Bowl III was Earl Morrall's, not his) Montana was 4-0 in championship games and 4-0 in Super Bowls Elway was 5-1 in championship games and 2-3 in Super Bowls McNabb was 0-2 in championship games going into tonight and 0-0 in Super Bowls. So, no I don't think of him being up there. Tom Brady might as well be a legend now that he is 2-0 in championship games instead of McNabb.
He may have had a legendary game today and a Super Bowl win if it hadn't been for that cheap shot late hit.
If Andy Reid would ever take the reigns off of him and let him throw the ball downfield (like Fisher finally did with McNair) and make some plays, then maybe he would get the chance to be a "legend". Of course, giving him some guys to throw it to would help too. I'd like to see him run Dick Vermeil's offense instead of Reid's dink and dunk nonsense.
McNabb has taken the Eagles to the Championship game 3 years in a row. The Eagles recievers have to be the worst in the NFL. The running game is very weak. And last year McNabb broke his ankle on the first play of a game, never complained, he played the entire game!!! McNabb is a throwback type QB. He has done all he can with that pathetic talent they have on that offense. Best QB in the NFL right now, bar none.
All very good points Bob, too bad he couldn't play through that injury tonight and get the Eagles a W. I'm so sad, mad, pissed right now I cannot help myself. I have heard the Eagles will make runs at some of top name wide out that are out there this year (Owens, Johnson, etc.) but they'll lose one of their key DBs, it's either going to be Vincent or Taylor but I know they can't keep both. I really think they need to work on their run defense and there defense as a whole but with most of their DL injured this year and some key injuries elsewhere the Eagles did very good with what they had. If the Eagles make it to the NFC Championship next year they'll probably be right up there with the 90-94 Buffalo Bills and draw comparisons of that team, I've already heard a few tonight.
They didn't say he was a legend. The word "legend" was used as a descriptive of the general public perception of McNabb, not the man himself. There are two main definitions of the word: 1) An unverified story handed down from earlier times, especially one popularly believed to be historical; a body or collection of such stories; a romanticized or popularized myth of modern times. 2) One that inspires legends or achieves legendary fame. Whoever said it meant it in the former sense rather than the latter.
Wow...I guess I just didnt look around myself here...but am I the only Panthers fan on the board? Tonights game made me as happy as I can be without the Texans being there.. oh well...carry on
I am not disagreeing with you Bob on McNabb's status, but I wanted to point out that your description of what he has to play with was eerily similar to John Elway in the late '80s under Dan Reeves. No running game (Bobby Humphrey and Sammy Winder, are you kidding me?), smallish offensive line (which is still the case today but nowhere near the technical prowess of today's Broncos' O-Lines), and a mediocre defense. At least the Eagles have a solid defense - something that those Broncos teams didn't have. Yet, Elway found a way to get his team to 3 Super Bowls in 4 years - granted they got creamed (and each time worse than the previous), but it was truly remarkable that he was able to do that.
Elway is a legend...the guy could orchestrate an improbable game winning drive like nobody else. Montana is a legend for similar reasons. When I hear legend, I think of a player who makes others better simply by being on the field. Earl Campbell anybody?
I totally disagree. Donovan is a great athlete and a tough guy but that does not make him a legend and certainly (IMO) does not rank him above other QBs playing now: Legends playing in the NFL right now: Favre (not saying I wouldn't take McNabb over him right now but that is my entire list of active QBs who are legends) Other current QBs I would take over McNabb: McNair, Manning, Vick and Brady. (I may be missing someone else?). Notice in this group there is only one Super Bowl winner (Brady) but the other 3 are all QBs I would rather have on my team than McNabb.
I think McNabb is a very good QB, but being in a big market like Philly has really helped him. He gets a TON of press and he does a lot of commercials. Let me ask you, which QB do people talk more about? McNair of McNabb? Which one has a MVP and has been to the SuperBowl? If you didn't know any better you would think it was McNabb! McNabb gets WAY too much press and McNair gets too little press because of being in such a small market. It is a shame! To answer your question..a legend? No way.
Quite honestly I think it is a tough call among all these guys--I honestly don't think anyone can present a clear cut case as the best of these, certainly none have excelled for a period of time to be included with the likes of Elway, Marino, Farve, etc. I however was saying before the playoffs McNabb should have been the MVP because he took a pile of crap and got them the #1 seed in the NFC and that that pile of crap would catch up with the Eagles. Deep in the playoffs better teams beat better QBs almost invariably. I am glad the Igggles lost and hope they get raided this offseason. Love to see the Cowboys take over in the East, might happen because the rest of the Cowboys team, especially the defense, is younger and pretty much better. I wouldn't mind the Cowboys signing Staley for cheap (good leadership) and Vincent for a decent salary, that would serve the Iggles right for what they are going to do this offseason to their vets who helped get them to 3 NFC championship games.
