someone had to do this...i believe landlord landry started the last one around mid-october and here it is already december. that just wont do. with that in mind, here is my top 10.

another great year for malawian desert blues, especially w/ tinariwen going on the daily show, playing funfunfun fest and touring w/ tv on the radio. it shows that american audiences are starting to open up to more global, off the beaten path kind of sounds. omar souleyman is another good example - syrian wedding singer/MC/good-times-party-dude - he came over here a couple times for some short tours.

    1. white denim - D - best band in austin right now - killer live show, jaw-droppingly amazing musicianship, great songs.
    2. tune-yards - whokill - good tunes from start to finish - really creatively put together - using loops in a really interesting way.
    3. terakaft - aratan n azawad
not the best jamz from them, but check out phil jackson at the :40 mark:grin:
    <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ljLa3Mchmpk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    4. peaking lights - 936 - fans of boards of canada, eno, slowdive, blackmoth super rainbow should check this out. dubby rhythms and textures w/ shoegazey haze - lots of roland space echo
    5. tinariwen - tassili - went acoustic and brought in dudes from tv on the radio. i like their electric stuff more, but this is still good.
    6. book of mormon soundtrack - funny as ****. id love to see that play.
    7. vieux farka toure - the secret - loses points for doing a duet w/ dave matthews. nothing against dave, but it really doesnt work at all. they tried to hard to appeal to american audiences w/ this album and b/c of that it doesnt measure up to his last at all.
    8. panda bear - tomboy - surprisingly, better than the first album.
    9. tv on the radio - 9 types of light - possibly their weakest album, but im a fan so i still like it
    10. beady eye - different gear, still speeding
seriously though, that album had 3 or 4 really good songs, and im not even a huge oasis fan. this tune here would be up there as song of the year for me...

My appetite for new music has dwindled in the last couple of years, but Joanna Newsom's Have One On Me is one of the very best albums I've ever heard.

    [FIRST TIER]
Panda Bear - Tomboy. I was stuck on this album for months. Not near as experimental as the first, but strong melodies and great soundscapes.
Holy Ghost! - Holy Ghost!. The album's too short, but it is perfect for the genre: It makes me want to dance... and I hate dancing.
M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. Still digesting, but I love 3/4 of it.

    [SECOND TIER]
Justice - Audio, Video, Disco. I appreciate and even enjoy the new direction, even if it's not as epic a release as their first.
Cut Copy - Zonoscope. I loved "Take Me Over" but the rest of the album was in the vein of their previous stuff, which while still enjoyable, is disappointing for new material.
Foster The People - Torches. I'm embarrassed to have a major-label backed and presumably manufactured band on here, but I can't deny it -- this was a solid album from start to finish. They out-MGMTed MGMT.
The Very Best - Super Mom Mixtape. It's just a mixtape, and not his best release, but I have a soft spot for this stuff.
Starf***er - Reptilians. Great solid sophomore release.

I can't even get 10 albums for a list -- it was a crappy year for music I think... and I have numbers to prove it! The last couple years, I would get around 40 albums each, but this year, I've only grabbed 20! Sure there's lots of stuff I checked out online per usual but not near as much music that I wanted to own and listen to repeatedly...

Also notable, I have no rock/metal or rap/hiphop on this list... I don't even have any folk and/or baroque pop holdovers from last year. When did I get so electronic?!?

I wasn't sure either, but I checked... and I'm right. INYOURFACE. Haha, They have a couple longish EPs, but this is definitely their second full-length.
