Anybody remember a little British outfit from England name of The Kinks? My theater company, Infernal Bridegroom Productions (which was the cover story of American Theatre magazine in September) is opening a rock opera by Ray Davies and The Kinks this weekend, and the tickets (for this week only) are super cheap. $5.99 Friday and Saturday at 8 and $7.99 Saturday at 11, which includes admission to a killer rock show after. After this weekend, tickets are $12-17. The show's called A SOAP OPERA. When The Kinks performed it in 1975, the Village Voice called it "rock theater that works." Here's a quote from the review: "...even the most casual comparison between Soap Opera and a transcendental rhinestone twinkie like Tommy reveals that rock'n'roll could use a lot more talent and a lot less 'genius.' Because Townsend is really a genius but he has just openers in the talent department whereas Davies is so talented, and so secular, that any mention of genius is not only irrelevant, but like Davies himself, rather amusing." Here's a link to a preview story in Houston Press: http://www.houstonpress.com/issues/2002-11-07/racket.html/1/index.html Here's a link to the Infernal Bridegroom website for ticket info: www.infernalbridegroom.com Hope to see some of you there.
I saw an ad for your show last sunday morning at breakfast at 11th street cafe in the Heights, and was thinking about trying to make it over to see it. Not sure if I will be able to or not... On a side note... My favorite Christmas song is "Father Christmas" by the kinks.
Way to go Batman! I love the Kinks. Is that the one that has the guy who's like a construction developer or something? I think one of the characters and songs is named Genevive(sp?) or Sweet Genevive. Anyway if it's not Soap Opera it's another concept album with a plot to it. Also I believe that Carey Winscott went to my Jr. High School. Ask him if remembers doing a skit/ poem/ story about being sick and not wanting to go to school but then realizing it's saturday.
Looks like a great show. I'll definitely make it over, especially after missing the last one. Good letter to the editor btw, put that little punk in his place.
i remember them having a song featured on an episode of "The Sopranos" this season... i think it was "Lola"
FB: You're thinking of "Arthur." This one's about a guy called The Starmaker who tries to turn an ordinary man into a star. Email me and tell me your real name and where you went to school and I'll ask Cary tonight.
Yep, that's him. Asked him about it last night. Did you play basketball? Are you tall? He said he thought maybe you were one of his best friends back then. Buck and Voodoo: Hope you can make it. If so, be sure to introduce yourself.
A Soap Opera - by The Kinks Have any of you seen this show? I caught the late show on Saturday after the Rockets game! What a weekend! The 'rock opera' kicks ass...an hour long rock show! This isn't typical theatre. If you think that going to see theater is all hoity-toity you are WRONG! get this: "And, though blessed with a loyal following among traditional art patrons, fully half of IBP's audience does not regulary attend cultural arts events of any description" -taken from the show's program. so no excuses, you don't have to be a "patron of the arts" to go or enjoy this... it's just good fun! so get out there and see this! it's all rock and roll! there's not much dialogue, it's song after song for an hour! and the IBP band kicks ass. the basic premise of the rock opera is this... ordinary man becomes a rock star, in this case a married accountant, Norman. Norman, the rock star has a typical 70's English rock swagger and attitude, it's great! the story continues with Norman going through everyday life, getting ready for work, going to work, working, coming home, getting drunk... It's funny, entertaining and it rocks! You can totally get the "Kinks" feel from the music. Some of the dialogue is dated from it's original release, back in the early 70's (I think) but IBP does take some artistic license and throws in some Houston references. shows are on Friday nights and two shows on saturdays at 8 and 11! If you go to the 11 o'clock show, you get to see the bands that are playing at the Axiom that night!! so... get out there and support local theatre.
