In my experience most adults can’t read either.

“About one in three children in the United States cannot read at a basic level of comprehension, according to a key national exam. The outcomes are particularly troubling for Black and Native American children, nearly half of whom score “below basic” by eighth grade.”

More attention on transgenderism will fix this.

I see republicans are playing the long game when it comes to finding new voters.

The only people obsessed with transgender people are the ones trying to erase them. I swear religious conservatives are more united by genitalia than any other issue facing the world.

It is not "most" but it is a non-trivial amount.

Among those can read, there is also a good lot that can not think critically.

I like how the right wingnuts wrote into law that young girl genitalia need to be closely examined (probably before each and every competition by anyone who "doubts" their birth sex) before girls can play girl sports.

“tHeY ShOuLd tEaCh uS UsEfUl tHiNgS LiKe dOiNg oUr tAxEs.”

That one is like nails on a chalk board to me. Public schooling taught you how to read and do basic arithmetic but your donkey ass is too dumb to apply either skill.

A summary of the cause, for those without access, would be appreciated :).

Guessing it could be due to method I have seen taught in school: guessing basing on visual context instead of learning the actual mechanics and sounds of letters

“What’s coming along is in the right ballpark at least,” said Dr. Seidenberg, of the University of Wisconsin. But he warned against treating anything as “gospel.”

There is also the danger of overemphasizing phonics. To establish true literacy, students need to be able to not only sound out words, but also read quickly and build enough vocabulary and background knowledge for comprehension.

    Another risk: impatience.

No **** reading levels are abysmal.

People don't read, they don't write. And they don't care.

Fighting transgenderism has become the primary focus of the GOP platform. Your hero spends all his time on this - and, of course, taking books out of libraries and making teachers and librarians out of be the bad guys. I'm sure that will help kids learn to read too.

    Mama's alright! Daddy's alright!

But, the kids seem a little weird!

They can't read! They can't read!

Must need to take some pills!

    Surrender! Surrender!

Ya pronunciation of words are probably the least useful aspect of literacy. There are extremely literate people who read all the time, but when they express a word vocally they might mispronounce it because they only experience it through reading but they fully grasp the comprehension and context of the word though and that's the more important part.

This won't be a problem in a few years when there are no longer libraries or schools with books in them.

I disagree with his approach. He has become part of the problem. I dont think physical books are part of the problem or solution.

Obviously a typo (typing failure) not a reading or writing failure, but thanks for chiming in.
