They never handled him right. It's very clear that this organization had their doubts about him. He's better off in Toronto.
This reminds me of trading Sam, Big Shot Rob, and Chucky for Sir Charles... but substitute Charles Jones for Barkley in this analogy.
Been tied up with other stuff so haven't been able to follow the Stros as much as I would like to. I understand the Stros gotta strengthen up pitching but Loperfido really seems like someone they wanted to keep. A very athletic young player with a lot of upside. I was at this game and the whole stadium was in awe of this play. Wish him the best with the Blue Jays and expect to see him doing more big things in this game.
He wouldn't have likely got the AB's in Houston regardless of trade or no trade. Not sure he obviously will get that chance in Toronto either... but sometimes when a player gets traded, it forces them to really inspect why they were expendable and forces them to work on the things that would make them less expendable. In this case, he's 25 and needs to learn how to not K as much against MLB pitching. That's probably the same problem faced by any AA or AAA player trying to break through. He's got the athleticism to play a quality OF for sure.
I really liked watching Loperfido play. He appeared to be a fantastic defensive player in LF and made a couple of amazing plays in the short time with the Astros. He also had speed on the base paths and power in his bat; just a fun and exciting baseball player to watch. He also seemed like a gamer/winner who took his job seriously while also enjoying the game and being a good clubhouse guy. It’s a bummer he strikes out so much and that he was traded.
He's got things to work on. Not sure he'll get that opportunity in Toronto who will still be looking to try and win next year. But he does provide depth, plays quality defense, and is young enough to get better at the hitting thing if given enough ABs (possibly on a rebuilding team or small market team). OF still remains the easiest guys to acquire, develop, sign, trade for.... the Astros just promoted somebody who was even more highly thought of over all these years, and he could barely crack the roster despite a weaker upper level farm and multiple open spots (given Tucker's injury and Chas' wtf year).
maybe the Jays will get the springer they were hoping for. not saying loperfido will peak as springer but there's a possibility he will.
