As some of you may remember, I am now back in college (OU for nursing school....don't hold it against me, please.)

I'm in an apartment, but I'm still in student housing and subject to their ISP, and I'm totally dumb and don't know squat about the internet police or any of that crap.

Questions: What does this mean for me, torrents, and any ::ahem:: "questionable" websites? Is there any way to hide my surfing and torrenting? P2P stuff is allowed here, so long as it isn't anything illegal/piracy, and isn't consuming too much of the bandwidth or whatever its called. As for surfing, I know there are proxy sites, but does anyone know how reliable these are and are any recommend over another?

I understand how email is tracked over a given server (don't send that tijuana donkey flick from your work account), but do they know I'm, for example, surfing this site?

I guess what I really need to know is how paranoid/careful I need to be, i.e. do I need to change my StumbleUpon preferences and not open the 'Hot Olympians' thread....I'm not looking at donkey-p*rn or anything crazy, but hot chicks are rather nice to look at. How far does big brother's arm reach?

Any wisdom here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Don't worry about it man, they won't catch you with the torrents, at least that's for sure. Anything related to p2p, I don't know about though, but continue on with torrents you should be fine. Man, I have this secret download thing for movies, games, music... everything.. I want to tell people but then I don't want everyone to have it and then it starts to become a hacked up place that has fake files and becomes insecure.

Ahh....see? This is just what I don't know. I've never once had to worry about any surfing being monitored or anything of the sort.

Don't worry. It's the internet. Just use proxies if you want. Search google there are tons with preferences and all of that.

For torrents depending on which program you use there are a couple of Anti-P2P blockers.

    For Azureus install Safepeer http://azureus.sourceforge.net/plugin_details.php?plugin=safepeer

    For uTorrent install http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php

For a back filter I use a program called Peerguardian that does well I guess. I haven't been sued so I guess its working. :D

    http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/

Basically all these sites download filters of IP addresses that are known to have Anti-P2P trackers. None of these are 100 % full proof, but they cover a good deal of them. PeerGuardian also blocks schools and government IPs as well as a bunch of other crap. It also auto updates itself when you load it which is nice too.

    Thanks for the replies, y'all.

    Much appreciated.

Any other thoughts or are proxies and London's suggestions the way to go?

See if your school has a DC++ server. It will make things much, much easier.

torrents are not so safe. i got a warning from Charter. if they get more warnings, they would ban me as a customer. i never really download anything, just did that once. not downloading anymore. since things are cheap anyways. not worth the trouble.

    Fixed.

    Lynus,
Ask around about an internalized hub run by students on the school's network. Often, it will be closed to the public, so you'll need to register with the administrators. Students will share tons of stuff on DC++ networks so it's worth looking into. Torrenting is kind of like Russian Roulette. You can take as many precautions as you deem necessary and still run the risk of getting the dreaded legal department e-mail.

Lynus, per your email, I actually got in touch with some OU students (kind of threw up a little bit in my mouth there) and they have had no problems using torrents there, and they're actually looking forward to getting back to campus due to the awesome DL/UL speeds.

If you're encrypted and using private trackers it's much better for your situation.

5 years so far, not a peep from them or anyone I know that uses SBC yahoo! BUT I do know some idiots who used limewire on campus and got their PC reformatted by the network.

Rapidshare is awesome for music, especially since its free, if you know how to use it! ;)

Thanks for that. And for everyone else's responses.

I'm way behind the curve on all this crap.

    :(
