Did anyone else notice how well Weatherspoon seemed to play with Yao last night? He made at least three very simple, but great passes to Yao on the interior that led to easy slams. To me, this once again calls into question the effectiveness of Cato at the 4 playing alongside Yao. Cato simply cannot make these types of passes, as he has terrible hands and has a nonexistent passing touch. The attention Yao commands in the paint forces the opposing teams' interior defense to play on their heels, creating opportunities for the interior pass between Yao and the PF multiple times a night, but we need a PF that can execute this play. Last night it lead to at least 6 easy points. Question is whether or not Weatherspoon the long term answer, and I think we all know the answer to that given his age. But does he take time away from Cato? Personally, I think Weatherspoon deserves to see more PT.
How about MoT doesn't get called for 3 quick/cheap fouls in about a minute's worth of game time, so he can do that work underneath with Yao?
Interior passing would be really great. Both Mo T and Cato have trouble giving it up to Yao or a cutter. Imagine a pf that can hit Yao or a guard cutting backdoor. We'd get so many easy baskets. So much better than dribble around and force it. So much better to use two big guys to make the ball move. Yao could really do a lot with a capable passer like Brad Miller or Chris Webber or Karl Malone. He could do well with a second-tier guy, wired that way, too. Our guys aren't wired that way.
Two passing big men would be very nice to have. It's a big reason why the Kings get so many layups. True they have fantastic shooters all around the perimeter that creates a lot of open lanes but they'd all be for nothing without the great passing big men at both posts who can make precision cutting bounce passes through crowded lanes. We know Yao's capable of doing it, but lack it on the other post side of the court. MoT very rarely has a good passing game and more often then not when he does try to pass to his teammates it results in numerous turnovers. Whether it be a kick out pass off a rebound, or just throwing in a crowd of defenders who pick him off.
I missed the Wizards game but I think Cato had some pretty good interior passes and passes out in the T-Wolves game and some of the other games.
I believe Cato is a willing passer, but it's just not intrinsic to his game like it is for a Brad Miller, Vlade, or even Kall Malone. You must have a good feel for the game, which Cato doesn't really have.
Cato is much better than weatherspoon. That's not saying much but we need cato's rebounding and shot blocking along side yao since yao underperforms in both. Cato also is our only big thug to stand up for franchise and cat. Yao's awesome but i dont think he has that quality yet. weatherspoon is a good reserve but cato and taylor should get the minutes.
I have been real pleased with Spoon. Anybody want to trade Spoon for Moochie Norris? However, he is a sub mostly playing against subs. I am hard pressed to push aside the two headed Cato/Taylor PF for the untested Spoon. However, I am impressed by what I have seen of Spoon so far, and am willing to give him more chances to prove himself.
