SF is a star who is under long-term contract.

Yao is a young upcoming but will be unrestricted free agent after two and a half years.

If you trade SF for some role players to Yao's supporting cast, then Yao decide to move to LA for the larger Chinese community and also for the maxim of his off court commercial value, then Houston will be doomed for many more years.

I am a Chinese Yao fan, but I still wish the Rockets the best.

1)Yao only becomes unrestricted if the Rockets dont extend his contract before that time....which aint happening...no way...no how. As I have said a million times.....the Rockets will do everything possible to keep Yao....bank on it.

2)Yao wants to be left alone and to live without a lot of attention being paid to him...why would he go to an area just to be idiolized by a larger percentage of the community?
His commerical value can be just as good here...as long as we are winning. Dont be fooled by the perception....Houston is the 4th largest city...this isnt some little cowtown that some seem to think it is.

Face it folks....the Rockets can pay him more than any other team if they want to...and unless he turns into a bust....they will want to.
Yao will be a Rocket for as long as he plays....Ms Cleo told me so...:p

    1) The Rockets will do everything to sign Yao, but they still need Yao's signature.

    2) The attention on Yao is receding now, which may start to affect his commercial value. Also Yao is getting used to the celebrity attention now.

    3) Yao makes more money off court than on the court. His offcourt money depends on his popularity and his apperance deep into the playoff.

Yao grew up in a different culture. He doesn't make all his decision by himself. Chinese govenment and his parents made decision for him before. Amd now he has a bunch of University of Chicago MBAs consulting him.

It is a business decision. Winning is the most important. If Yao can't win at Houston, he will move, just like if Houston can't win with Yao, they will trade him, too.

It's certainly not crazy. Whether it's the best decision is another matter. The rationale for doing it is:

    1. SF is not a true "franchise player."
    2. Yao Ming might be a franchise player.
    3. Yao Ming and SF, if not incompatible, do not maximize each other's abilities.
    4. Hence, one should trade SF, because there's a higher reward possibility with YM.

Of course, there's also a higher risk - which is why it's an uncertain proposition. But it's certainly not "crazy."

It is? Can I see your crystal ball that allowed you to make this claim? As far as I can tell, NO ONE knows what Yao is going to be in a year or two. We can, however, look at the progress Francis has made in 5 years and say with a lot more confidence than we can say about Yao that Francis is never going to lead this team very far. In both cases there is no definite, final judgement that can be made (unless I can get a look at your crystal ball that is) as players change over time, but we've had plenty of time to analyze Francis, and hardly enough time to analyse Yao.

There is already a dumb thread discussing whether Yao will stay or not.
