THE I HATE VAN GUNDY FAN CLUB Now I know a lot of people on this board loves the new attitude he seems to be bringing to the Rockets. Well, I'm officially starting the I HATE VAN GUNDY FAN CLUB. I know Jeff Van Gundy is reading this post because he has this bookmarked on his web browser in his office. So hear me out! It's no secret that you are a control monger and egotistical b*stard. You were that way in NY and you think you can do that in Houston. That tough NY attitude isn't going to work in H-town. All you are doing is tuning people out. Even before training camp your players were already hating you. Now it's no secret that they don't believe in your weak system. You stunk in New York and you were lucky that you played in the weak East that made you look half-way decent. Your Offense will NOT work in the West because the teams in the West are bigger, faster, and much more talented than in the East. As the season progresses, I know that there will be more people joining this club! I know that I'm going to get bashed for this post but I love my Rockets too much to see a crazy New Yorker destroy my team. Yes you will bring some much needed Defense to this team and maybe even teach them a thing or two about attitude and intensity which, this team has lacked. However, by continuing to being the big bully on the block, you are isolating the people in this organization that made it great. Take a chill pill Jeff. This isn't New York. ---------------------- What's this I heard : Rudy T. to coach Portland or Dallas next year? hmmmmmm
Jeff is a badass coach. Regardless of whether or not things are working perfectly right this moment, he's still a basketball genius. That, in my opinion, will work out to the Rockets' advantage eventually. So I don't hate him. But if the team puts up a worse record than last year <barring injuries> I will then have to question his compatibility with this team and evaluate further. But not before then.
Being from NYC, normally, I'd agree with you. But the bottom line is that these athletes earn millions of dollars a year to play a game- poo hoo if they can't take the heat!! Bottom line is that JVG is getting paid to coach a basketball team. He will be judged solely on his results. If he is really a pain in the *ss within the organization, a la Rick Carlisle, he can very easily be canned if the owner sees fit. If the players tune him out, and they continue to lose, he will be out, period. Here's a thought: how come so many Knicks players support him and speak favorably about him? How come Pat Riley said that JVG "coached rings around me" and that the latest poll from GMs (I think they know a little about coaches) voted him the 2nd best Xs and Os coach? I understand the concern, believe me, but shouldn't we wait until the regular season ends before we can give an honest evaluation? Oh, and 8th seeds that make it to the Finals do not suck, no matter how bad the conference. Maybe we're not talking 90s Bulls or 80s Lakers, but suck? Come on now, look up hyperbole in the dictionary.
Jeff is a mediocre coach in my opinion and he has a very bad temper in the locker room. I don't know if he is compatible with this group of players. Jeff is no Parcells of Basketball. He is definitely not the greatest motivator. So we'll see. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think we will have a better record than last year and we will miss the playoffs again. All aboard with this club...please stand up!
I don't hate JVG, so I don't think I can join just yet... The thing is, with a new coach, you just don't know what to expect. They may have been the best damned coach back in the day or Tim Floyd. However, that's the past, and with a different group of players. I, for one, am on the fence here. Though I like the scrappiness that JVG will bring to this team, I also think that having him be a disciplinarian with this young team MAY backfire. I love the progress I see in Eddie's game which can, supposedly, be attributed directly to JVG challenging him, but I also do not see Stevie improving much in the PG department. Sure it's the preaseason. Still, I don't know what to expect, and neither do you. JVG can be a good fit for this team, but it may also be another 4 playoffless years. I never really liked the hiring of JVG (thought Dunleavy should have been second to Larry Brown), but I think he deserves a season before we make a "I HATE JVG CLUB." (And is it really called a FAN club if it's a HATE club?)
Can I add any of the people in your club to my signature? I think it's way too early to hate the man. I still think we'll be much improved and the haters will eat their words. Then again I could eat mine too. P.S. RocketRich, did you joy the Houston Rockets fans in NYC club? Here's the link if interested... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/houstonrocketsnyc/
But did you see that NBA General Managers' poll on NBA.com? I'm not saying that your opinions of JVG are any less credible than theirs, but quite a few people in high-level NBA positions regard him as a great "X's & O's" coach. I'm getting my opinions of Jeff from 3rd party sources for the most part (thus far), and sources like those are the most reliable in my mind. I mean, I've been unable to judge accurately from firsthand gameplay observations with so few true exhibitions to work with.
Hey Jeff, If you are reading this, there are always a bunch of losers in every bunch even in houston... You got the city behind you jeff...please show these millionaire crybabies how to share the ball and play defense... its not like houston, has gone anywhere in the past four years...ouch... you will be our saviour and take us to the playoffs, well, you a smarter franchise and Yao daddy of course... P.S. Please cut mooch and griffin and bring in kurt thomas...
Hate is a pretty strong word. Let's just say I don't care for him very much. The funny thing is it's not his fault that I don't like him. It's Les that I blame for setting him up for failure in this town. I think we should be calling for Les's melon on a platter. Talk about a serious poo poo platter.
One name... Steve Patterson....who used to work with the Rockets...and is now...President for the Blazers Patterson had a nine-year stint with the NBA’s Houston Rockets during which he earned a reputation as one of the most respected administrators in the league. The chief architect of the 1993-1994 Rockets squad that captured the first World Championship in franchise history, Patterson was the club’s General Manager and Alternate Governor from 1989-1993.
I think people are jumping to conclusions and making predictions too early on. Heck, the real season hasn't even started. Let's all wait until at least the all star break to make our assessment!
Umm, how do you know he has CC.net bookmarked? If the East was so bad, and the Knicks are in the East, doesn't that mean the Knicks team is bad also? Having accomplished a lot with a bad team in the bad East is badass.
Whatsup... I know quite a bit. Go look at my past posts. I don't post very often but some people do listen.
If we hired Dunleavy instead we would have Brand right now(I heard things). Brand was about to be traded, and Dunleavy hiring nixed the deal. Great, now I really turned alot of people against JVG. Anyways,JVG wouldnt have coached the clippers and Brand wanted out. I think it was Cuttino/Rice/Cato. But Rudy sucked. He just didnt motivate the players. And I dont think Dunleavy would have had the balls to control these players either. Theres no point in having Brand if Steve is going to dribble, dribble, dribble, iso, iso, iso. Btw,JVG,if your reading this. I think you should go after Artest with all your might. Cuttino/Cato/picks/trade excemption. He is the missing piece if you keep Steve. What Steve lacks,Artest excels at mainly defense, passing, size, toughness. He is the ying to Steves yang. francis/artest > kenny smith/maxwell jackson= elie griffin = horry ming <hakeem
While I hear and don't entirely discount your points, I still feel JVG is a huge upgrade from Rudy. I also feel Ewing, although I hate him, is a major upgrade from Mr. Meaningless Larry Smith.
