OK before I get into on what I know. IM not looking for no glory or the anything such. I might have a low post count; but IM a true veteran to this site so don't judge me on that or for anything else of that matter where here goes. My cousin recently called me to his house. A close friend of ours was over there and wanted to see me. This Friend of mines is a true long time friend of TJ Ford his Brother Tim Ford and His Family. I for one know Tim Ford I went to school with Him; and we all from Baytown where TJ Ford grew up originally. I know of TJ Ford, I never met him before or I have not seen him play only on TV I only know he's Tim Ford's Little Brother. When I went over I started asking him how he was doing and such and how's life. He told me things was fine, such and such, etc., and then he went on to say he's thinking about moving to Florida. I said "Florida?" He said yeah. He was planning on moving to Miami with Tim,TJ An another friend that we know and himself. He said that Miami was planning drafting TJ. He said TJ was in Los Angeles Training for 7 weeks and that he has the same Agent as Kobe Bryant. He said that TJ Threw a party in Austin May 4th and it was off the hook and that they Knock off some Freaks. He told me that TJ said: The Rockets have talked to Miami in regards of the 5th pick overall, They already has made a trade offer to Miami. He said the Rockets have Offered Cato, Mobley for the 5th pick. Then he went on to metion that really no one wanted to take on Cato and his contract but talks was on the way if in fact they will willing to thrown in Griffin instead of Cato. He said that the Rockets was looking to move Francis to the 2 Guard. This is what TJ Ford has told him. I didn't probe, he was just rambling all this information to me. It's not a rumor to me it's a source. So take it on how you want it and will see in June.
I hope this doesn't hijack the thread, but it has something to do with it. What exactly are the salary cap implications for trading players for draft picks? It seems to me that it could be an easy way to get rid of a lot of salary without having to take any back. Is there a certain maximum amount of salary you can trade for a draft pick without getting any players back, or does the other team have to include players along with the draft pick to match the salaries?? Let's say the Rockets trade Cato and Mobley for the #5 pick and sign that pick to a max rookie scale contract, that's basically getting rid of about $7million in salary...
Wow. I had to do a double take when I saw who the thread starter was. The title has "MacBeth" written all over it. A-Train, That really wouldn't work because the rookie salary is not that high (Hilario was the #5 pick last year and has a 4 year, $10 MIL contract). You can trade a draft pick for a player, but the draft pick's projected salary must be within 110% if both teams are over the cap. So that type of trade would have to be Cato and Mobley for a #5 and another big contract. I could be incorrect on this though.
I could be wrong, but I think draft picks are worth 0 on the cap before signed. Let's apply it to here. I don't think Cato and Mobley for Miami #5 is allowed because both teams or over the cap; thus, Cato+Mobley's salary is more than 15% off of 0. Unless one team is under the cap, then the trade is impossible. Matching salaries have to be returned (ie. Laphonso Ellis --oooh, I love old school players, get me Kendall Gill while you're at it-- + someone else). After rookies are signed (post draft), then they have cap value, and remember, since rookie salaries are set, signing your rookies while you're over the cap is permitted (unlike the NFL, I think, though I'm probably way off there). Also consider the fact that I gather most of my knowledge from playing NBA Live (94-2003)and NBA 2K(2K-2K3), and that is how trades with draft picks work on the games. So again, I could be way off.
1. If you're a veteran, why did you just register 4 days ago? 2. This trade doesn't work. 3. Why/How would TJ know anything about this trade talk?
IM not looking for everybody to believe me. IM not here to Preach The Word and save souls. IM just telling what my friend told me and who's a local professional athlete him self. And my source is no secret or big deal to me. I rather not give his name all over the net. but best believe you can pull up his name on any search engine.
Draft pick count $0 as far as trades go, which makes the stated deal impossible. I too question why exactly TJ, or his brother, would have any infomation on trade talks, even if they are about him, especially this early. Mobley and Cato add up to about 12 mill. And it is something to think about when you consider Miami has 2 players making that same 12 mill that they are believed to be trying to get rid of desperately (Jones, Grant). Worth keeping in the back of the mind, at least. PS, Felder- if your information comes true, you better believe you'll get some glory.
well, TJ's agent would probably have a good idea of what was going on behind the scenes (if anything). that being said, i don't see who it would be making these deals considering we don't have a coach, or a direction. if this is true and works out accordingly I would $hit my pants, TJ is the man.
Hmm... G Cuttino Mobley F Eddie Griffin for Miami's #5 pick LaPhonso Ellis -------------------------------------- Would you do that? I wouldn't. Too much risk.
Hey Im just a Fan of the Rockets and a Fan of this Site. Im just relaying to you on what I heard; Don't kill the messanger.
Two options, as I see it. Either this guy is lying, or he's telling the truth. If you feel he's lying, why even bother responding? If he's not, why bash him? If I heard this kind of thing from someone that connected to somebody involved, you can be damn sure I'd be posting it in here, and I'd hope others would do likewise. I'm not saying that it's accurate, although saying it isn't because it doesn't work cap wise doesn't work...there could be superflous players involved, and those mentioned were just the chore...or it could be that his friends are wrong, just hoping, or whatever. For what it's worth I think that a backcourt of T.J. and Francis would be a defensive nightmare.
