Yang criticizes 'patronizing element' of Democratic messaging ahead of convention speech
BY JOE CONCHA - 08/19/20 05:17 PM EDT

Former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang on Wednesday said there's a "patronizing element" to party messaging that could cost Democrats at the polls.

"Democrats have this tendency to have a message out there, and then if you don't like the message it's like, 'Well, it's your fault,'" Yang told The Washington Post Live in a video interview. "There's this patronizing element to a lot of what we say and do, and it's hurting us, and it's wrong, unproductive. It's a great way to not win."

The comments from Yang, who's a CNN contributor, come a day before he's slated to speak at the Democratic National Convention.

He also criticized convention organizers for not giving Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) a bigger role beyond the procedural formality of nominating Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Tuesday night.

“She was asked to nominate Bernie, which I thought she did very effectively, but I thought that was a misuse of AOC," Yang said, referring to the lawmaker by her initials. "She is one of the people who can cut through this medium and deliver a message very powerfully, so I feel like the DNC just missed one on that."

I agree with Yang in terms of that the message is patronizing that it’s simplistic and choreographed. I know Yang is new to politics but has he seen a convention before? Modern conventions are very scripted with almost no surprises.

Once again with the persecution complex and this from a guy who never broke 10%

Are people just realizing Biden won?

Who the **** cares what he thinks AOC role should have been? Get some skins on the wall before trying to tell folks how to run ****.

Man a lot of folks are coming of as entitled babies but then Yang has all ways come off as a whiner.

    Is this thing on?

Yang is a good business friendly candidate
he cared about people regardless of income
he wouldn’t let business burn or get looted for sure

If he ran with Lil John they would make a great team

Why are Democrats held to higher standards?

I'm sure conservatives have such plesent words about black culture and liberal elitists.

Yang has a right to criticize it because he abides by what he says. Using this story for fodder by someone who doesn't is worthless.

I’m sure Trumps KKK rally will be non patronizing and unchoreographed.

Yang fits right in as a Democrat because nobody is more critical of Democrats than Democrats. I think the DNC (what I’ve seen) has been much better than expected. The message isn’t about one issue like UBI. It’s as broad as possible to try and win over suburban women.

Yes AOC should have gotten a bit more time. Keep in mind there are also about 300 prominent Democrats who all want their time slot as well. It’s actually kind of remarkable and frankly charitable that they got Yang a time slot. I’m glad they did but still.

It starts at the 24 min mark. Context matter and the hill is only after clicks.

He wasn’t even talking about the convention. And if you notice, the article didn't said he did either. It’s the lack of context that lead readers to think he was... watch above

Because the Hill has successfully tie two unrelated things together for the readers. Really suggest you watch the clip. He also talk about AOC earlier in the exchange (might be at the very beg). I suggest you watch that also before making an opinion.

CNN: “Catfight!... AOC tonight refuses to support Kamalas bid for the presidency in 2024. Instead refers to her only as “Vice” President”
