Greene promises bill renaming Gulf of Mexico ‘ASAP’

    https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5071882-majorie-taylor-greene-donald-trump-gulf-of-america-bill/

    excerpt:

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has promised she will introduce a bill “ASAP” to back President-elect Trump’s idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico.

In a post online, Greene shared a video of Trump pitching the idea to rename the body of water to the “Gulf of America.”

“President @realDonaldTrump’s second term if off to a GREAT start,” the Georgia Republican said. “I will be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!”

Earlier Tuesday, Trump told reporters he wanted to change the name of the gulf as he criticized Mexico for taking advantage of the U.S. over trade and immigration issues.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” the president-elect said. “What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”

I didn't know about the Mt. McKinley thing. I flew past Mt. McKinley once, in 1982. Was pretty impressive.

Weird move by Obama to try and rename it.

As to the Gulf of America thing...shrug.

Different countries have different names for the same thing.

Germans call the Baltic Sea "Ostsee".

i flew past mt mckinley in 1981 and noel gallagher was on the plane with me.

it wasnt a weird move at all. its something the state of alaska had been petitioning the federal government to do for decades and ohio politicians kept blocking because mckinley was from ohio. republican politicans from alaska even praised obama for the move. and obama didnt rename it...the state of alaska did. it was a bill submitted by lisa murkowski...a republican.

I’m fine with it as long as the bill also allocates funds to coastal regions to combat the insane property insurance hikes we are seeing every year due to living along the gulf.

Do something with your power to make peoples lives better instead of just trolling and you can call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of MAGA for all I fcking care. Just sick of all the talk and no real substance. Fcking do something or shut up.

Is insisting that people say "Gulf of America" similar to insisting that people use "they/them" and other "preferred pronouns"?

I see that "On Tuesday the White House broke with decades of precedent and blocked Associated Press reporters from attending two of President Trump’s media availabilities. The AP said it was blocked because it hasn’t changed its stylebook entry for Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America'" (CNN).

Say it my way or face consequences.

The consequence here is the loss of a great privilege, the access given to the small group of reporters who speak directly to the President. But it made me think of the pressure that has been applied to ordinary people to say things in a way that is dictated by their political antagonists.

The difference here is that the “Gulf of Mexico/America” does not belong to the US, while presumably a person “owns” their own gender identity.
