Ok, I saw the trailer for the Grudge a couple of weeks back, http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/the_grudge/, and I thought to myself that the style looked a lot like some recent japanese horror flicks like Ringu (remade as the Ring here) and the Eye. While looking at quicktime for some new trailers, I see Ju-On listed. I don't know what that is, so I check it out. Turns out, from watching the trailer, that this is the original Japanese version of the Grudge, which for some reason I thought was the first original american movie in a few years. So I look it up on IMDB to see when it came out and I find that this movie has yet another previous incarnation. First it came out in 2000, either to japanese video or tv, then it was made into a film for 2003 and a sequel a few months after that. The Japanse version came out in NYC yesterday and the american remake comes out in October. I guess the reason I pointed this out is that I'm dissappointed at how few original movies seem to be made these days. Either we see a film version of something else like comic books, books, oand tv shows or we see remakes of old movies from here or abroad. Something that is really interesting is that all 3 versions of this movie were directed by the same guy. So the american remake was directed by the original japanese director. I thought that was kind of cool. I'm not really a fan of horror movies at all, but I have a kind of curiosity to see how the movie evolves in each incarnation.
