How does Norah Jones win best pop album? That song sounded more like slow jazz. Who are the judges to these events? Is this the grammys or the Oscars? every person just about has been movie star giving out the awards. I bet Pamela Anderson loves that Kid Rock and former ex girlfriend Sheryl Crow are up on stage lol
Actually, this is the year of the songwriter. Norah Jones, Dixie Chicks, Bruce Springsteen, Vanessa Carlton, John Mayer, Michelle Branch, Avril Levigne. Hell, even the R&B/Rap stuff - Nelly, Eminem, Mystikal, Ludacris - is very song-oriented. Even the hard rock category went to the song record - Foo Fighters. They honored Jonny Mathis and the Bee Gees and even had performances from Simon & Garfunkel as well as James Taylor (that one by Taylor with Yo Yo Ma was unreal). This year was all about the song and, frankly, thank God. Very appropriate that the awards were back in New York. Welcome back!
NJ accepting that last award was the most pathetic acceptance speech I have ever seen for anything. I mean even like in JR High when people would accept the certificate for most improved student.....it was that terrible. Who in the hell were all those people saying those stupid things into the microphone? That was hilariously terrible.
Band members, the songwriter of the hit and her producer. Yes, it was awkward and bizarre, but she was deserving. At least she didn't stop like Fred Durst and say, "We gotta stop this war thing." Oh brother. Overall, pretty good performances and appropriate nominations and wins. I HATE the freakin' grammys generally speaking, but this one wasn't bad.
How come after somebody performs, they win what ever they are up for. Do they always do that? It seems like that is how the Grammy Works. Kelly Rowland looks pretty damn good. Kelly Rowland is a number 4 seed in the region I am going to place her in.
Homer: Lisa, did you see the Grammys? Lisa: You beat Dexy's Midnight Runners. Homer: Well, you haven't heard the last of them. -- Oh yeah?, "Homer's Barbershop Quartet"
I didn't get to catch Fred saying his little line there. That would have been great. I know you have to stick up for your fellow acousticians Jeff, but still, I don't care how deserving she was.... those people are performers, they should learn some public speaking skills. My Good Lord that was embarressing to watch. I almost wanted Eminem to go up there and crack some heads. But it was probably the best choice as far as the music went.
Pop is short for popular and she is as popular as you can get right now. How album has been #1 or close to it for the last year.
Nelly should have won. His songs are creative and are catchy. He is too wild for the conservative Grammys, though.
Eminem won a Grammy too and he sounded like a dumbass. Most of them do. This isn't really about acceptance speaches anyway. Yes, they are performers, MUSICAL performers. They aren't public speakers. Ever heard Springsteen do an interview? One word: embarrasing. Peter Gabriel isn't exactly Mr. Glib. Dave Matthews can barely string two coherent sentences together. I could care less if they could even say two words as long as they can play great music. By the way, I was actually pulling for Springsteen for album of the year and I did think Eminem and Nelly were both very deserving. Norah Jones wasn't my favorite record this year either. But, at least there were some decent choices made by the nominating committees this year. No Jethro Tulls in the bunch. Oh, and when oh when will NARAS decide to pull the yearly "We are the world" speech by the President of the Academy? We get a new Prez this year and he sounds as idiotic as the last guy who called downloaders "thieves" to a smattering of applause but mostly boos last year. Will someone please tell this new moron that no matter how big of an "emotional touchstone" music can be, it isn't going to feed the hungry or make everyone around the world play nice. Talk about freakin' hyperbole!
His record is a good one. I just find it interesting that this Grammy awards was dominated by records with really good songs. Was it that there were a lot of good songs or just that the Academy decided songwriting really is more important than just performing and being cool?
Eminem did the classy thing and thanked all the people who helped build rap music to what it is today. props to em.
Seeing as how I feel that anything on the radio and any award show honoring it is crap in general... I decided to spend my Saturday night by renting "The Godfather" and watching it for the first time in my life. Needless to say I'm sure I am much happier than anyone else who posted in this thread.
People who haven't seen the godfather before scare me. But not as much as people who are in their first week after watching the godfather for the first time. All that testosteroni!
I was watching some of it while flipping channels on watching Xmen (dunno why, i have the DVD, btw the sneak peak of X2 was like an extended version of one scene that was on the trailer ). Basically, I wanted to watch the live performances. Nelly w/Kelly, Avril, Vanessa Carlton, Coldplay (singing with the NYC orchestra), and John Mayer are just awesome live singers. I was a bit dissapointed that Carlton and Avril didnt win anything. "A Thousand Miles" has to be one of the greatest songs of 2002 and I just love the Avril album. Was happy to see John Mayer won for his "girly" song (btw, his recent Live album that came out is FANTASTIC).
