My girlfriend is working on a paper in music history. I have done a research on the net and found these songs are widely regarded as the firsts in their music genres: The first rock and roll song: Bill Haley and the Comets' "Rock Around The Clock." The first disco song: Issac Hayes's "Shaft" The first heavy metal song: Beatles' "Helter Skelter" The first rap song: Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" The first techno song: Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love' Agree? Disagree? Opinions? What are the firsts of the other music genres, like R&B, soul, blues, jazz, alternative, etc. Please help.
Rapper's Delight definitely wasn't the first rap song... but it was probably the most popular one at the time that made the genre somewhat popular (along with Blondie's "Rapture"). There was another cut by The Fatback Band called "King Tim III" that came a bit before it. And then there were the groups that started it all long before either of these like DJ Kool Herc and the Herculoids... that's going back to the early 70's I think.
First use of feedback in a recording - I Feel Fine, The Beatles First Psychedelic Album - Sargent Peppers Lonley Hearts Club Band First Motown hit - The Miracles "Shop Around" (1960)
The first song about the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota was....you guess it, Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota by Weird Al Yankovic The first song about Spam - Spam by Weird Al The first song about nuclear destruction during the holidays - Christmas at Ground Zero by Weird Al The first song about Santa Clause going on a drunken rampage, slaughtering most of his reindeer and taking the elves hostage - The Night Santa Went Crazy by Weird Al The first song about a cross dressing truck driver - Truck Driving Song by Weird Al I'm telling you, the man is a musical pioneer...
Cool...was that in one of the movies or in The Flying Circus? Any song about potted meat has to be good...
I would say "Walk This Way" Run DMC & Aerosmith. Also, the Beastie Boys were a punk band before they switched to rhymes.
I always thought that Rock The Boat by the Hues Corporation was the 1st Disco song. Rock Your Baby by George McRae is also a close second.......I believe that both songs were produced by Casey and Finch of KC and the Sunshine band. Shaft doesn't seem like Disco in the least,it's more Psychadelic Soul which was still going strong in the early 70's and the song is not as dance oriented which was a Disco rule. Born to be Wild was the first song to use the term Heavy Metal therefore I think it must be considered.
