Amusing... http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1002,53%257E454471,00.html Fighting Whities Launched GREELEY - Unable to persuade a school district to drop a mascot name that offends them, some American Indian students at the University of Northern Colorado have named their intramural basketball team "The Fighting Whities." Led by Solomon Little Owl, director of Native American Student Services at UNC, the team chose a white man as its mascot to increase awareness and understanding of stereotypes that some cultures endure. They are upset with Eaton High School for using an American Indian caricature on the team logo. The team is called the Reds. "The message is, let's do something that will let people see the other side of what it's like to be a mascot," Little Owl said. "I am really offended by this mascot issue, and I hope the people that support the Eaton mascot will get offended by this." The team is made up of American Indians, Hispanics and Anglos. They wear jerseys that say "Every thang's going to be all white." "It's not meant to be vicious; it is meant to be humorous," said Ray White, a Mohawk American Indian on the team. "It puts people in our shoes, and then we can say, "Now you know how it is, and now you can make a judgment.' " Eaton School District superintendent John Nuspl said the logo is not derogatory and called the group's criticism insulting. "Their interpretations are an insult to our patrons and blatantly inaccurate," he said.
Haha! Damn straight! Lets see how it works when the shoe's on the other foot. "Their interpretations are an insult to our patrons and blatantly inaccurate," Whatever
Of course, there's a chance that white people just won't care about a team called the Whities. I know I don't. If teams want to use a mascot that happens to have a white guy in it then so be it. As a matter of fact, several teams already use white guys as their mascots and some use it in their logos. The high school my son will go to (assuming he doesn't move) has a white guy who looks a lot like Yosemite Sam as their mascot. If the purpose is to show white people how horrible it is to have a person of your race or ethnicity be incorporated into the name or logo of a school, I'm afraid that might well backfire. We don't have to shown how it feels to be mascots. We already are mascots, and it apparently doesn't bother us (that's not to say that it shouldn't bother minorities. They want to be bothered by it, then they can be bothered by it. My question has more to do with what they think they will accomplish with this and why they seem to think that there are no white people mascots).
HaHa.... this is hilarious. Check out the badass logo, halfway down the page. I have to get me a whitie jersey... http://www.greeleytribune.com/article.php?sid=7262
I find it funny, but I think a letter to the editor of Sports Illustrated a couple of weeks back summed up. It was in response to an article by either Rick Reilly or Steve Rushin about racism, where it appears perfectly acceptable for black people to say things like "he's ok for a white boy" or "white men can't jump", but the reverse is not. The essence of the letter is that, the reason why white people do not tend get offended by such comments, is that they have never truly been discriminated against becuase of their color.
See this is EXACTLY the kind of thing we need to prove that racism is just plain stupid. I am now officially a fan of the WHITIES !!!!! DaDakota
I have several freinds that are Cowboys, I think they should unite and fight against this steryotyping of them ridding bucking horses. there is much more to a cowboys life than riding a horse Fighting Whities, thas pretty funny though
See, now that would have been offensive. I have to say I never really understood the Native American objection to logos or names that invoked Indians (specifically or generally). These things are used as an homage to the Native American heritage our land has. And, the issue keeps coming up because the native population really did/do have a large impact on much of the country. Do they really want every marker that recognizes their existence and their importance obliterated?
I understand their objection to Redskins (any one for Blackskins, Yellowskins, Brownskins?), however I do not understand the objections to Braves (Patriots?), Chiefs (Generals?) and names of that sort.
And you gotta think that the Cleveland Indians' Chief Wahoo mascot isn't the most respectful representation of Native Americans.
