I know it's early and not all the numbers are in, I hear those wunderlic scores are pretty important. In your vast knowledge and your extensive abilities to evaluate how college talent translates into NFL stardom who would you most want the Texans to draft? I am listing the "consensus" top ten, who would be your choice. Please use a whatever it takes mindset when making your pick meaning if you think it should be Brady Quinn assume the Texans have the means to go up and get him; this is the player you would most want to be a Texan. Personally, if AP is on the board when the Texans are on the clock he would be my guy but i'm interested in the breakdown of who the fans want next year.
I picked Joe Thomas, followed by Landry. I would love AP or Russell, but I don't see either of them lasting to #8.
Branch from Michigan. Not a sexy pick, but it would do wonders for the defense (Mario in particular) to have a good run-stopping DT.
too bad russell will be drafted #1. Texans could have used that guy. If we get peterson we'll be lucky
1. Jamarcus Russell 2. Joe Thomas 3. Adrian Peterson 4. Gaines Adams 5. Alan Branch 6. Calvin Johnson 7. Laron Landry 8. Dwayne Jarrett 9. Reggie Nelson Brady Quinn *would only draft if he fell to our 2nd round pick.
If AP is there at 8, I would pick him, but I think the Browns will snag him. I think we're going to pick a safety, so my vote went for Landry. Another pass rusher would be good too, but we might not need a 1st rounder for that.
1. Landry 2. Thomas 3. Peterson (not that I agree with selecting a RB in the first round but a value pick at 8 it's hard to pass up)
1.Adrian Peterson/RB/Oklahoma 2.Jamaal Anderson/DE/Arkansas 3.Alan Branch/DT/Michigan 4.Reggie Nelson/FS/Florida 5.Leon Hall/CB/Michigan I assume Johnson, Russell, and Thomas are gone.
I voted for Peterson. I am not fond of OU but my girlfiriend is a big fan and so I have seen him enough to be sincerely impressed. People don't often point out that he is still maturing and has gotten noticible more athletic every year there, which is what I've seen. That having been said, I will not flip out if he is available and they pass on him to go offensive or defensive line or (perhaps) cornerback. IMHO it was the wise thing to do last year and even though it will hurt to leave AP on the table it would be the wise thing to do this time around. The game is won in the trenches and on "D", period.
I think the QB crop this year is fairly mediocre - I wouldn't go that route with a 1st round pick. Troy Smith won the heisman basically by default. No one had a fantastic season, and he was the QB for the #1 team in the country and made a few big plays, so he got it. But his numbers were just average. Before Colt's injury, their numbers were almost identical, and I don't think anyone would say Colt was putting up Heisman numbers. If AP is there, you have to consider him. Both because he's that franchise-type running back and also because his running style fits the system - make one cut and go forward. Or you go with the OLine to try to finally solve that disaster.
1. Landry - we need new safeties, period 2. Branch - run stopping DT would be huge 3. Thomas - OL help is always needed
wow... just... wow. average numbers? average?? really? 31 total TDs and 5 INTs is average? a qb rating of 167.87 is average? vy posted 38 TDs and 10 INT with a qb rating of 163.95 - in 13 games, including the championship game, which smith will get a chance to play in tonight. there maybe wasn't a viable runner-up, i'll agree with you on that - but troy smith was hardly a default winner, and certainly wasn't "average." average....?
Vince's passing numbers alone weren't Heisman-worthy AT ALL - it was the combination of rushing and passing that made him unique. Troy Smith threw for 208 yards a game, with 6 games under 200 yards. He threw for 2500 yards - somewhere around 35th in the nation. He was very efficient and certainly a good decision maker. But they weren't "wow" Heisman numbers. Brady Quinn threw for 1000 more yards and had 37 TDs and 7 INTs. Troy Smith won it because his team was 12-0 and the major competition had some bad big games (Quinn) or was hurt (Peterson). Can you name a QB who's primarily a passer who won the Heisman throwing 200 yards a game?
