What is Emo? I had my two little nieces over last night. They are like 11 and 9 years old. This little one had pained the three letters E M O on both of her arms. When I asked her what Emo meant, she said it means kids who cut themselves. That actually had me concerned a bit. My older niece meanwhile at 11 is starting to dress up very gothy, listening to rap! (Eminem in particular, weird huh?!), painting her nails black and wearing punky clothes. The whole day today I was worried about how fast they are growing up and if I'll be able to relate to them anymore, cause I have no idea what the kids now-a-days are into. Then today I accidently came across this video on youtube. It seems like emo is a growing social phenomenan that is gaining in popularity among youngsters. Has anyone here heard of this "emo" phrase before? Am I the only one that didn't get the memo about what is now cool among kids? Can someone tell me more about emo and what i means to be it?
emo? I have no idea.. I just know that I like fallout boy, afi, funeral for a friend, and etc, etc, etc. Don't worry your nieces will be just fine.

Emo music kinda had a resurgence right around 1999-2000 with emergence of bands like Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World, and Death Cab for Cutie. But then it died down right around 2003. Then all of a sudden it made a huge comeback in the past two years with bands like AFI, My Chemical Romance, Panic! at the Disco, and Coheed and Cambria. Most emo folks don't go around cutting themselves or dress in goth gear. I view emo people as those who are in touch with their feelings and the feelings of other people around them. Nothing really wrong with that. Worrying about an emo music listener hurting themselves is somewhat similar to worrying about a gangster rap listener committing a drive by. It doesn't make much sense to follow that logic.
I get in touch with my inner feelings everyday and shed a tear. Why is there so much pain in this world?
Emo = I am starved for attention so I will be "original and independent" by acting and dressing like everyone else.
That lead singer's vocal stylings are MUCH more ambitious than his voice can tackle, but you have to give him credit for pushing himself. I still enjoy their music (probably kills them to hear a 40 year old say that), and I think they could possibly be great some day.
Back in the 90s it was Grunge and Alf now its Emo and Indie. I've observed this emo trend for a few years now, it really is hard to classify. It takes more than a few things from the whole Goth movement, but at the same time they couldn't be more different. Goth seemed to be a rebellious, expression of a distaste for the normal and status quo, a detachment from Mom and Dad's society. A vainglorious attempt to make oneself look better than everybody else by being completely miserable and unsatisfied with every aspect of existence. Emo just seems like some kids that want to get in touch with their feelings, so instead of communicating, they listen to depressing, and emotion-driven music that fits their cause and wallow in self-pity. Henceforth the whole "cutting themselves" and "crying" is more of an extreme way to classify those who consider themselves caught up in the phase. If you spot someone in the Mall wearing some rimmed black glasses, and a 80s punk or metal band T shirt you're probably looking at an emo kid.
please don't make this thread about music. cutting has absolutely nothing to do with music. your niece's cutting is not related to any "emo" culture. cutting, while difficult for most to understand, is somewhat common amongst teenage girls, and has ALWAYS been around. even Princess Di was a cutter. this is a really informative book, and i suggest you urge your niece's parents to read it: http://www.amazon.com/Bright-Red-Sc...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1196861863&sr=8-1
it is also important to note that while cutters can very well be suicidal, cutting is NOT an attempt at suicide.
Yeah me too. I also listen to Bright Eyes sometimes. I know it's a little over the top, but sometimes it's exactly what I need to hear. As for the whole emo culture. Well it's just like when I was that age wearing flannel shirts and listening to Nirvana. Every generation has something like it.
Exactly, its a cultural fad that will die off soon. As for Bright Eyes, Conner Oberst sounds like he's singing with a punctured lung, but I know what you're saying about needing to indulge in some emotional musings. It isn't hard to figure out why bands like Simple Plan and Fall Out Boy are so popular in this day and age. Hell when I was 17 I used to listen to the song "Konstantine" by Something Corporate when I was feeling depressed about an unrequited like-like. That was probably my only "emo" encounter.
Oh man, I actually kind of like Death Cab for Cutie. Does that make me emo? In my defense, I’m not in touch with my feelings or anyone else’s for that matter. In fact, I generally don't like people. But I did cut myself a few nights ago.* So am I emo or not? This is all so confusing. *I was trying to open a box of beef kabobs.
