Judge for yourself and see which one is more unstoppable. Have these two player ever did these up and under moves more then once? Hakeem Yao
Im not sure if im confused or not, but I always thought the Shanghi Shake was when Yao faked left then right (or vise versa) then went to the fade away shot. Thats what Bill Worrell always calls that move. I think that was just Yao's Dream Shake impersonation.
That is not the Dream Shake. That is not the Shanghi Shake. Yao's "Shanghi Shake" was just a turn around jumper and Bill Worrell got too excited and named it the "Shanghi Shake" Edit: Thanks for posting those two clips
Oh really? Everyone from the GMboard said that gif of Yao was the Shanghi Shake so thats what I go by....who knows.
I would call that Hakeem move the washing machine. He just put David through the spin cycle. But that is not the dream shake. As the other posters have said the Shanghi Shake takes considerably less skill to do than the dream shake. All Yao does is a turnaround jumper, but Hakeem fades out of bounds while shooting from almost behind the backboard. Actually I was shooting around yesterday and did a version of the dream shake from about 16 feet like Dream used to do. I have tried it before from short range and was able to get it off easily, but man I almost threw my arm out after trying one from that distance. Freaking amazing move that is hard as hell to pull off.
Haha. Yea I always make Dream's shake at about free throw range and I honestly think im a Bad-a. Thats until i try it further out, and air ball it completely and I get laughed at
Man, I feel stupid now> I shouldn't have trust those folks at the GM's Rockets board, as they claimed those gifs were the the Dream Shake/Shanghi Shake respectively. Does anyone have a clip of the actual Dream Shake and Shanghi Shake?
Yeah but what made that move really work was his opponent never knew which way he was going to turnaround and fade, to the left or right. Mostly he'd be on the left block and fake left and turn right and fade and swish every time. If they thought they had him figured out he'd fake right and spin left and swish. It was unstoppable. I remember a few games at the summit during the first championship year just being in awe of that move. i felt sorry for the guy guarding him. It was so automatic. there was nothing that could be done to stop it.
I am starting to agree with some of the posters here who think Yao is not slow and that the only problem is his poor stamina. It's kinda amazing that a 7'6" 300 lbs could make a move like that. He does slow down a lot when he's tired. But when Yao is energetic, he's not slow at all.
Don't feel stupid. Good effort man! If someone has videos of a real Dream Shake and Shanghai Shake, it would be cool to see them side by side. As a pure move, the Dream Shake is more unstoppable because of the speed of Hakeem. When you throw the players into the equation, the Shanghai Shake is more unstoppable because of Yao's height. Not only is it impossible to block, it's pretty much impossible to even alter Yao's shot because there is no actual threat to block it if the defender guesses correctly and lunges at the ball. I've seen the Dream Shake blocked when a tall center or quick leaper guesses correctly and Dream fades to his right. When Dream went to his left and shot the jump hook I can't remember him ever being blocked.
IMO, Yao's slowness (esp. lateral movement) only affects him on defense. On offense, he is plenty fast enough. The problem on offense is tenacity.
In defense of noize, I remeber Francis was asked about that play of Yao's, he said "that's dream shake".
