Anybody else a fan of the show? Watched the first episode last night on Discovery Channel. It is kind of surreal seeing Capt. Phil Harris on the first episode because of his recent passing, I have no idea how they are going to get that into the show. I did notice a lot more dramatics in this episode that has not been the case in the past, seems like they are giving it a "Soap Opera" type of feel. I hope that is not the case for the entire season, but with the undoubted emotion sure to come in future episodes because of the passing of one of the shows main characters, it might just be the case this season.
yeah, I watched it and it kind of stinks that Phil's two sons were fighting so intensely at the start of the trip. to the point where they had to experiment and switch one of the sons onto Captain Sig's boat.... probably a good decision at the time by Phil but looking back on it that would have been some precious time lost for that father/son.
I only started last weekend during a TDC marathon on Discovery. I was instantly hooked. there was an episode where a young deckhand got a phone call that his disabled sister had died. it pretty heart-wrenching. and I had heard about Captain Harris. there was one great episode last season where his son was throwing the hook, which was a big step in his career, and Captain Harris was playing practical jokes by speeding up and slowing down, creating distance, etc... he seemed like a good, git-r-done kind of guy. all of the skippers were keeping it real, in fact.
TDC's production makes, probably one of the hardest and most dangerous jobs in the world, look glamorous. Excellent show (even with the soap opera angle)...very entertaining. I like Mike Rowe doing the narration. And it did feel somewhat weird knowing the future of Captain Phil. Very likable guy. Can't help but think that his son will feel cheated of that little bit of extra precious time with his dad. RIP
I can only imagine that they are showing the tension between to Captains and the brothers as a build up for the unity that will probably take place when the episode comes when Capt. Phil actually passes. As always, Hollywood has a way of making things seem overly dramatic with editing. Brothers fight all the time and in that kind of "Family" business the same can be said between captains. I think they were trying to overplay the the fighting aspect a little bit in episode 1
