I was talking to a buddy of mine that lives in the Columbus area and we were reflecting on what the Cavs did this year and the outlook of teams in the East this year. Well, I started thinking and brought up the fact that the rumors around the Cavs trading for a big were swirling around whether or not to get Amare Stoudemire or Antwan Jamison, WITH a few Troy Murphy mentions in the mix. Of course we know what route they took, but wasn't their biggest reason of not trading for Amare because they wanted to keep JJ Hickson on the squad? The guy barely got any playing time in the playoffs period and Jamison was exposed to how soft he really was against the old Celtics forwards. Not that Amare did any better but that was against the eventual champs front line, so that is a big difference, imo. Anyway, I was just thinkng about this and thought that maybe all the work Cavs management boiled down to one decision and they blew it, maybe they wouldn't have won a ship but at least the Finals... IDK. Now Lebron is on his way out along with all the others on the staff. for them. Where this: Can turn into this:
agreed with lb23 leaving just not to the knicks... but i understand your post GM Danny Ferry might of blew it and in the end he got fired.
I think Amare would have been the better choice to trade for in February instead of Jamison, because Amare seems tougher.
The Cavs blew it when they signed Larry Hughes for megabucks. They never recovered. That was the beginning of the end.
Because he had a feeling that Lebron was leaving and would therefore expose him for what a mediocre GM he really is without Lebron carrying the team anymore. Danny Ferry really blew it if those rumors are true that he could have had Amare if he gave up JJ Hickson. I am certain that outside of Ferry, Kahn, Wallace, the other 27 GMs would have made the move. Like the OP said, JJ did not even get extended playing time in the playoffs; he sat on the pine, while Amare was playing pretty damn well. Ferry was probably on suicide watch soon after.
East could get very very interesting real soon . The big three in East from last year Celtics , Magic, Cavs could make changes as well . Magic might push for CP3 , Celtics older and lose free agents, Cavs lose Lebron . Chicago and Miami could be entering the upper tier if free agents head to those places.
There wasn't a hint of pressure on him publicly to leave. By all accounts, it was his decision to go, partly because they let his buddy go, partly because he knew he wasn't going to keep James (and get run out of town for it). Ferry was terrible on the job though. All he did was overpay and reach for guys. He assembled a deep supporting cast of C+ talent, but payed seriously high dollars for them. Among his "buy way above market value" acquisitions: Larry Hughes Ben Wallace Wally Z Anderson Varejao Mo Williams Delonte West Shaq Jamison Yikes. Ferry was the Anti-Morey. Overspend and Overvalue.
You hit the nail on the head. I was shocked when they signed Hughes to that horrible contract. It seemed like they had all that cap room burning a hole in their pocket and ended up making a rash and uninformed decision. That was the first time I realized that the Cavs front office was completely clueless and the moves that followed were just further proof.
