I know there's a thread on this but I wanted to ask a simple question that I believe is a D&D topic. Is the media going overboard showing that kid getting beat to death on prime time television? I really couldn't believe when I saw it on the national news yesterday. I found incredibly disrespectful to the victim and his family. I used to think at least the national news organizations ABC, CBS, NBC, had higher standards. Or do you feell its fair game. Do we really need video to see how disturbing that story is. Personally I can't see the video in the Hangout thread at work. The story was painful enough reading it. I didn't need the video.

I don't think so Pgab, they still show that guy in Vietnam taking a bullet to the head.

This is something that should be shown.

Maybe if the victim's parents asked them not to, then stop...but maybe they want it shown?

I haven't seen the video, and I don't really want to.

I can't think of a good reason for it to be shown on television.

Edit: Ok, I guess to convey what a serious issue gang violence is.

I am not sure I can answer that.......I doubt I would be watching much TV....but it is up to the victim's family to make that choice.

Personally, I am not sure what I would do.....but gang violence should be curtailed.....and if this can show some of the dangers of it......

From reading and watching some of the online content, they are showing the video to try and ID the person who hit him in the head with the 4x4 post.

I don't watch TV but can imagine though with all the media outlets the saturation is probably pretty heavy.

I think it's pretty bad that they're showing this on TV. I've changed the channel every time it's come on because I really don't want to see it. I don't have to see a child beaten to death to know that gang violence is a problem. And it's definitely not something I would want my (hypothetical) children seeing.

The Media is getting out of hand.
This is almost like watching a Snuff Film

I remember watching the movie UNTRACEABLE
That is kind of what it feels like
like I am driving this phenom
to get more and more IMO unacceptable crap shown on TV

I doubt this video is being covered to such an extent for such altruistic purposes like motivating people to curtail gang activity. This problem has plagued big cities since the 60s; raw cell phone footage of a regularly-occurring tragedy in 2009 can't shock a desensitized population. The average American citizen probably won't be moved enough by this video to petition for some inner-city policy changes. Besides, shows like Gangland and other media outlets reveal the dangers of gangs to a greater extent (see History Channel's high ratings) anyway.

Do you really think that a national audience, comprised of a demographic ranging from rednecks in a country bar to suburban house wives in SoCal, can help identify some black kids living in the neighborhood of Roseland, IL?

I'd think CPD would only distribute this video in the Chicago area where the max number of people affiliated with the Black Disciples/the victim live. That is the only population that can help. I agree with Rocket River, this is in the same vein as the ideas shown in the movie Network (1975): pure shock value to garner ratings for an infotainment industry.

This video reminds me of the one where the martial arts student stomps a mentally-ill kid's head in. Some of the comments on another forum were sickening like "dude that was effing tight!"..

I thought the point of showing the video was to help identify the suspects.

The truth is that it's the only way TV can compete with the Internet.

The evolution of news has left TV in a spot where to grab attention they need shocking stories.

Don't worry though, TV is on it's death bed and it shouldn't last too long.

That would make sense if it was only shown in the Chicago area.

I actually caught the local news here in Chicago for the first time ever last night.

This story's wasn't even mentioned until 15 minutes into the newscast.

It's news, shocking news. How many times have you seen the assassination of JFK, Regan's assassination attempt and the space shuttle exploding? This is nothing new for the tv media.

You seem more upset about the broadcasting of the footage rather than the actual act. May I ask why that is?

because its a freakin kid getting beat to death. his death under the circumstance was enough, it doesn't need to be out there for entertainment

as adults we can appreciate the horror of the act, how do you think some kids react to this, "awe man this is freakin cool"
