This was reported in the Boston Herald today:
"The Celtics, who reportedly had made an offer to Houston free agent Dikembe Mutombo, appear to have backed out of their pursuit of the ageless 7-footer. A league source said, short of retirement, Mutombo has indicated he is reluctant to move from his home in Houston, which also serves as the base for his many international interests, including his mission work in Africa."

Deke doesn't strike me as a nudie bar type -- although we might catch him at Rick's Place. :D

He lives in Houston now. I remember reading a quote from him about how he had moved all of his things to his place here in town, and that he was staying.

prob not. deke might have turned that down too, leading to the C's signing of scott pollard for the vet min.

i don't think the rockets will offer him more either. his pride may cause him to retire this summer since no one will offer more than the min.

I thought Deke has been getting paid around the vet min.. no? He doesn't strike me as the kind that would demand much more than he's worth. It would be nice to get him back on the squad behind Yao, but I personally don't think it's that big of a deal if we don't either.

He was getting paid around 2.2M last year. The veteran's minimum for him is 1.2M. I would think that would be enough for him, but apparently he doesn't think so. I think he is very valuable to us, but we can really only offer the veteran's minimum because of luxury tax issues. From a production standpoint he is worth more.

He is probably the 2nd best backup center behind Mourning. If he started he would probably be in the top half of starting centers as long as he didn't break down. The guy is obviously worth more than the minimum, but we can't afford it. Les should promise an under the table donation to his foundation a few years down the road to make up for it. I don't think we would get caught.
