I heard about this a couple of months back. I was searching for something, can't remember what, and I read a sentence under one of the sites that google.com listed. It said something to the effect of "I can't believe this bs, a black captain america!!!" Anyways I looked it up back then and got a basic idea for what the story was going to be about: Basically, before Steve Rogers became Captain America, the govt had to test their super soldier serum. The story is based somewhat on the Tuskegee experiment, where doctors gave black men syphilis, didn't treat it, and told them they would be ok. The story here is a bit far fetched, where they take 3 black soldiers and test the serum on them first, but this is a comic book and it's supposed to be far fetched. Personally, I like the idea for lots of reasons. It adds a new dynamic to a series that hasn't changed much over the years. It is controversial, gotta love that. It exposes some the history of Captain America. There aren't many main characters who are black in comic books, save for Spawn and Blade(he didn't become a major character until after the movie). It's also a good way to get more african americans to be interested in comic books. I don't know about other places, but I have only had one black friend who read comic books and I have never seen a black guy inside any of the comic book shops I've been too. The book was launched in Philly at one of the largest black owned comic book shops in the country. They sold out of their first shipment in less than a day. Anyways, I'm curious what you guys think. Is this Political Correctness run rampant as I assume some of you will say, or is it the opposite? Is this a good idea, are you interested, and would you buy this series if you are a comic book reader? Here are some links:CAN YOU HANDLE THE TRUTH? This Marvel's news release about the series. Truth: Red, White & Black #1 Read the first issue for yourself, the entire book is online right here.
I like this idea too. There arent to many blacks in comics. Screw Blade and Spawn. Blank Man was weak.
Yeah, I like the idea. Anyone here read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay? Great novel. Anyway, the heros are comic book writers during WWII and they try to create the first comic relating to anti-Semitism, but they meet with a lot of resistance from publishers. Have to say the panels look kind of crappy on that website though. Maybe I just don't know enough about comics.
You've Come a Long Way, Baby. Ethnic Superheroes in Comic Books http://www.balchinstitute.org/museum/comics/baby.html
Is that Iron Fist? I think I remember that from a long long time ago.. I haven't read comics in years, but I do agree that there were never enough Black heros.. I think the X-Men did the best job of making a story about superheros something bigger since there was the underlying theme of civil rights and equality.. They even incorporated several foreign heros..
Ha! Black Lightning, that reminds me of an episode of Harvey Birdman where Black Lightning questions why he has to be named "Black" Lightning. I forget the joke he makes, but I know it was a good one. Curse my failing memory.

Oh, sorry, that "Ha!" was me laughing as I remembered that episode of Harvey Birdman, i was in the middle of posting that at the same time you posted yours, so it wasn't about you calling him Iron Fist. Speaking of Iron, remember Iron Man's buddy, War Machine? I forget what the difference was between his armor and Iron Man's, but I remember that War Machine was black and his armor, instead of being red and yellow, was black and white.
haha.. the joke went something along the lines of re-naming Aquaman, White Fish! anybody here ever read The Boondocks? It's a daily comic that's pretty political and quite humorous! http://www.boondocks.net/main.html
http://www.seanbaby.com/super.htm This website has some hilarious Superfriends and Legion of Doom stuff!!
There are quite a few black super heroes. In addition to those previously mentioned, you have Storm, Cabal, Steel, and my personal favorite, White-hatin' Coon.
that must be it.. Perhaps I lost a few too many brain cells in college! Was Power Man's alter ego Luke Cage? If so, that's who I'm thinking of..
Power Man Real name: Luke Cage First appearance: Hero For Hire 1 Powers: Luke has steel hard skin, with super-human strength and endurance. History: After being framed for a crime he didn't commit, Luke agreed to be part of a medical experiment in prison. When a prison guard interfered in the proceedure it went awry, giving Luke super-dense muscle and bone mass. Escaping from prison, Luke set up the "Hero for Hire" enterprise to use his new-found abilities for profit. Eventually teaming up with Iron Fist, Cage spent years on the run after Iron Fist's supposed death. After several brittle reunion attempts, Cage and Iron Fist slowly patched up their personal and professional relationship.
Yes.. I got one right!!! Do you guys remember the Marvel Secret Wars? That was probably my favorite cross over story because it involved just about everybody. My older brother had a wall sized poster depicting a battle scene... How cool was it to see Wolverine fighting next to Spiderman and Hawkeye?
