And I mean really has never heard of. Titles you think only you and the store owner of a classic video game shop could reminisce about. I'll start it off by trying three RPG titles. Warsong [Genesis] - best turn-based strategy RPG game I've played and a killer soundtrack. Betrayal at Krondor [PC] - no, not the sequels, the original. Load up your DOS and be amazed by the live-action animation! Few RPGs have such an amazing plot and develop it so well. Wordlocks oh baby. Wizardy VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant [PC] - ok, maybe someone has played this one... old-school RPG at its finest?
1) Dynamite Cop (Dreamcast) -When I was younger, my friends and I would play this game for hours, it was epic. also, Milo's Bowling Lanes (N64)
Betrayal at Krondor I've heard of but never played. But Wizardry VII? Come on... anybody that loves RPG's knows about the Wizardry titles. That being said, I've never played any of them, and I have no idea why. lol. ------------------ Most great games are heard about, but one that comes to my mind at the moment are the following : 1) Back in 2001 (had to look it up), there was a PC RPG called Arcanum : Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. It had a pretty loyal following, but was one of those games that never got a ton of publicity from what I recall. 2) Back around 1998 or 1999, some computer programmer who always wanted to do a football sim decided to quit his job, take months off from work, and make one for the PC. He called it Front Office Football. If you're into the management of football teams and sim'ing seasons as opposed to eyecandy, this was a fun game. I see he's released another edition in the past year or two (www.solecismic.com).
Book to game translation that actually worked out well. First person exploration with Tactics Ogre/Final Fantasy Tactics style combat (though not as complex). Darklands is an old favorite of mine. Open-ended RPG with a great historical setting. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9QZLd0xC-T0&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9QZLd0xC-T0&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Wow, Darklands, brought back some great memories. I still recall the countless hours I spent trying to strike a balance generating an experienced character with the appropriate age (yes, you could start your party with a few 60 years olds!). The tactical combat, the templar and witchhunt back story, the hand drawn in game graphic, everything has such a great feel to it. Also played quite a few Wizardry... in fact from V onwards. Extremely difficult RPGs. While we are on it, what about the BUCK ROGERS gold box series. Hell, what about all the AD&D gold box series. I used to cheat like a maniac duplicating scrolls of fireballs like mad. In fact, while we are on it, I must mention Knights of Legend - one of Origin's earlier RPGs with spot attack limb-based turn-based combat. What a pioneer. Wanna partake? I will now leave it to others to mention the Ultima series, the Martian Dreams, Savage Empire, etc. Heck, even Hero's Quest (so you think you want to be a hero) by the Sierra people was fun
