1.george washington 2.abraham lincoln 3.franklin d. roosevelt 4.woodrow wilson 5.bill clinton ------------------
first of all, lincoln is widely considered the best of all time. Second, i hope that was your idea of a joke because bill clinton has been mediocre at best. ------------------
no it wasnt a joke. and am i not entitled to my own opinions. With bill clinton as president we sustained the biggest economic growth of all time.He lowered the defecit and icreased the surplus, he also lowered unemployment at an astonishing rate. So maybe Clinton did'nt lead us into a great victory at war, and maybe his personal life isnt a thing to admire, but he has made a difference to alot of people in this country and i think he deserves some credit. ------------------

Skinner: To begin the evening, here's a tribute to some of our lesser known Presidents! Children: We are the lesser known presidents! You won't find our pictures on dollars or on cents! There's Taylor ...and Tyler ...and Fillmore ...and Hayes There's William Henry Harrison...."I died in thirty days!!" Man, is there a Simpsons Quote for EVERY situation, or what? ------------------ If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding!!
1. Clinton-easy, easy choice. He is easly the most effective president of all time. Too bad the reps had to hurt his image. 2.Kennedy- he did so much in so little time. Too bad he couldn't finish his term. 3.William Henry Harrison-30 days, always good for a laugh. 4.Lincoln-back when republicans were like democrats, and democrats were like reps. Nice work with the civil war thing. 5.Washington- I guess the first president deserves a little credit. ------------------ "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning how to put food on their family while being put to death."
In no particular order: FDR - what he did in office considering the difficulties of the time and his health problems was amazing Lincoln - in some ways, an overrated president, but the end of slavery deserves a top 5 ranking Eisenhower - a very fair man - pissed off Democrats and Republicans alike John Quincy Adams - one of the most spiritual men ever in office - believed slavery was wrong when many of his contemporaries (Jefferson, the other Adams, etc.) not only accepted it but practiced it. Thomas Jefferson[/b] - I never liked him as a person or his personal beliefs (he owned slaves, was aristocratic and pompous) but he was an absolutely brilliant person with great foresight despite some of his personal shortcomings. ------------------ The way to use life is to do nothing through acting, The way to use life is to do everything through being. - Lao-Tzu
FDR. It's noteworthy in that he had so much problems such as :social reform issues, WWII, being confined to a wheelchair, yet proved himself as a leader for the most terms ever elected. Truly a man of the people. ------------------ Sometimes you gotta do the next best thing!
Roxran, just admit that your favorite president was Jefferson Davis. ------------------ "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning how to put food on their family while being put to death." [This message has been edited by ZRB (edited January 13, 2001).]
I've always been a Teddy Roosevelt fan. Fought in war (with his "Rough Riders"), stomped out monopolies, spoke sharply carried a big stick. Also a big sports guy. They named a popular stuffed animal after him, and put his mug up on some mountain in South Dakota. ------------------ "Thirty-seven?" -Randall, Clerks www.clutchtown.com
How about Teddy Roosevelt? Not sayin he was the greatest but we owe most of our national parks systems to this man. ------------------ Now chew through my ball sack
what exactly did kennedy accomplish? besides almost getting us involved in a nuclear war which would have killed almost everyone in the world ------------------
Well I got one answer but Kennedy fans won't appreciate it too mouch so I better not ------------------ Now chew through my ball sack

FWIW, Jefferson didn't actually condone slavery. He did own slaves, but if you read his writings, he says that it's a deplorable practice and that it will one day come to an end. His method of solving the problem was to send all of the slaves back to Africa (I guess it seemed like a good idea to him, but I can't see it). Kind of hypocritical, eh? Just think that's an interesting note. As far as Clinton is concerned, please don't say he's one of the best presidents ever. Not that I hate Clinton (or love him), but he really didn't do much of anything while in office. The country was good and all, but he didn't actually do much of anything. Very few major bills passed, etc. Either way, lets wait a few years before we canonize him. Usually both the economic and social effects of a President are felt after he leaves office. My top five: 1. Washington -- the conviction and courage required to take this position is more than most will ever have. He also had more integrity than most politicians today. 2. Lincoln -- I agree that he is a bit overrated, but leading a divided nation and having the cajones to outlaw slavery takes Washington-ish courage. 3. Teddy Roosevelt -- Groundbreaking President who reformed the office and the United States as well. Very foreward thinking in his views. 4. John Quincy Adams -- Ditto what Jeff said. Did a tremendous amount to develop the United states through canals and highways. Also started govt. funding of science and arts. 5. Jefferson -- the brilliance of the Louisiana Purchase deserves mention. ------------------ "Any answer that can't be questioned is no answer at all. It's gibberish. I've gotta agree about Kennedy -- He's tremendously popular, but he made a TON of mistakes that still hurt this nation . . . Vietnam for starters ------------------ "Any answer that can't be questioned is no answer at all. It's gibberish. Vengeance, Of course Jefferson condoned slavery - he owned slaves. He was a hypocrite - sometimes supporting slavery/racism in his writings, other times writing against it. As Jeff said, though, he did have a great mind for many things. Woodrow Wilson was a smart guy (former ivy League president) and ahead of his time with his League of Nations push, but he was a serious biggot and elitist. He insisted that there be segregation in federal builidings, used military force freely, and imprisoned anti-war protestors during WWI (including Helen Keller). FDR - did a whole bunch of stuff redefined a great deal of American social policy. JFK - would not be considered so great if he adn't died young and beautiful. Revolutionized politics, mostly negatively - the whole image over substance thing. Began the covert war in Indochina, went along with the planned invasion of Cuba, and was slow to act against racial segregation in the South. Clinton - really not worth mentioning. One of the best post-Kennedy politicians and campaigners. Reagan - hee hee, at least he was a good actor, oops - no he wasn't. Washington - "Government, like fire, is a dangerous servant and a terrible master." Gotta like that. Teddy Roosevelt - Was a racist and militarist, congratulated an American general who in 1906 ordered the massacre of 600 men, women, and children on a Philippine island - an invasion/slaughter that had begun under McKinley. ------------------ EZLN
HMMMMM interesting thread. I guess I should put in my two cents, or should I say Lincolns. As far as how much they changed the nation for the better goes. HANDS DOW IT WAS F.D.R. the man us from being just another industrial nation struggling through depression to an industrial giant that saved the world from a tyrant. as far as the mystyque goes, its a Kennedy thing. as Mel Brooks might say, "its good to be the king" and then there was reagan THE ANTI CHRIST. people like bush/reagan made the rest of the world hate America. presidents like kennedy/Clinton make the people of the world have a little hope for america. its their human appeal, and lack of pomp and arrogance(I bet you thought i was gonna say pomp and circumstance) Its guys like this that actually know that diplomacy is not a synonym for military action. i remember in the 80s we would bomb anyone that looked at america wrong. and always shoot first, than ask the dead why they are so pissed at us well that was fun, anyone else want a soapbox to stand on its only slightly used peace ------------------ Hanta-Force Paintball http://www.hanta-force.com [This message has been edited by The Voice of Reason (edited January 12, 2001).]
