Cliff era... Ok, which is the best Metallica album that came out before 1991? No offense to anyone that likes the newer stuff, but they all sucked and had sold out after the Black album. After picking out the best, then list in order the remaining albums from best to worst and leave some comment. Best: Master Of Puppets Epic song writing while keeping it heavy with a lot of variety. My favorite song on there is Disposable Hero and Battery. I also think its the best produced album which still sounds awesome today. The remaining from best to worst: -...And Justice For All -Ride The Lightning (Fade TO Black is the best ballet in metal) -Kill 'em All -self-titled Black album (slow and less thrashy, but got some good tunes) Newsted era...
I like how you put Master of Puppets in the middle, the image basically shows what Metallica was all about back in those days.
Master of Puppets is awesome! I have all the old Metallica albums, I stopped listening to their new stuff after the Black album. They changed their style way too much. That song King Nothing was pretty much the end of good Metallica music. I used to listen to Master of Puppets on repeat while I was sleeping
oh come on, none of you heard the beauty that is St. Anger? just jamming to Lars banging on a trashcan is total extasy.
in defense of st anger i liked it, but i certainly hope they revert to pre-black days... i voted for ...and justice for all.
When you watch them preform it on DVD the drums don't sound like trash cans, sadly, the songs and album still suck.
I remember when the Black album came out, and all my hardcore Metallica friends thought they sold out back then. Everybody and their dog bought it, from rednecks to vatos, once "Unforgiven" went into heavy rotation. Little did the metalheads know... they hadn't even begun to see a real sellout until "Load" hit.
"Kill "Em All", "Ride The Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" are all pretty much neck and neck (and neck), but I'm going with "Ride" cuz the title track and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" are my favorite tunes. So: Ride the Lightning Kill 'Em All/Master of Puppets Black Album ...And Justice for All Everything after the Black Album is awful.
i actually like load and reload. it's not the same metallica sure but i think there are some good songs on those albums. st. anger on the other hand is pure trash. their greatest album will always be master of puppets. the title track, battery, disposable heroes, orion, and their best song ever, sanitarium.
ill second that! my 3 favorite metallica songs are on there. no remorse metal militia seek and destroy recently saw that movie some kind of monster. it was just laughably pathetic. like spinal tap, but without the irony. hetfield and lars are two of the biggest pansy, whiney, selfish, self-centered crybabies in the history of rock. kirk is the only one in the whole movie who doesnt come off like a total prick. i guarantee that the day metallica breaks up is the day kirk comes out of the closet. but i must say i never recognized what a bad-ass guitar player he is till i saw s.k.o.m. keep reachin' for that rainbow kirk! EDIT: i forgot about gargage days revisited - not a full album, but im suprised none of you headbangers mentioned it yet - that was a kick ass record.
...And Justice for All was my BIBLE in high school. All of these albums have their charms, however. You know what sucks about Master of Puppets, though? "The Thing That Should Not Be." Man that song blows. I always skip it.
i got a story about the Black album. the silliness has never ceased to amuse me. so, there i am chiling in my class someday in high school. the topic of music comes up amongst a group of people. we begin discussing songs and what's cool. well, one dude blurts out, "hey, have you guys heard that new band Metallica?" another friend and i look at each other with the "WTF" look and my friend says, "dude, they're not new." me, "yea, they've been around for years." original guy, "every band names their first album after themselves." then we all started laughing, "uh, no."
i think that song fits perfectly fine on the album. if you want an out of place song, try listening to "Can I play With Madness" on iron maiden's Seventh son album.
