Again, how do you pick just one? And what do you base it on? Personal or sentimental favorite? Quality of the picture (e.g. some of the slasher flicks are scary, but are they truly the best?)? Supernatural vs. human killers? Very difficult. Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, Jaws, T.C.M., all great in their own way. But if I had to choose one film, a film that still haunts me to this day, one I could definitely call the greatest horror movie of them all, it would have to be: The Exorcist (call me crazy, but my honorable mention would be The Blair Witch Project- I know that's a very polarizing film- either you love it or hate it- but something about it was very creepy watching it in the theatre at the time. Maybe cause I've done a lot of camping? Hmm. "It's not the same log, Mike, it's not the same log.......................it's the same log...")
Thanks, I almost spit my Coke out on the keyboard- Ha! That's hilarious, man. What about Kazaam, or whatever that film was with Shaq? Pretty scary stuff.
I beg your pardon, sir, but "Silence of the Lambs" is not horror, it's suspense, I believe. Or at the least, it's a thriller. My pick goes to "The Exorcist" hands down.
Halloween. The Descent. Those two are probably the scariest horror films I've ever seen. Exorcist didn't really care for (it had it's moments though), The Shining bored me, Poltergeist is good but it isn't terribly frightening to me. I'll give an honorable mention to Saw as well. The first one premiered at a time when I think the horror movie genre was growing stale. It had some clever traps and twists, I thought good performances, and an inventive and fresh story, some definite chills and a few scares. And while the first one had some cringe worthy moments, it wasn't the flesh fetish fest that later movies turned out to be. Two things absolutely ruined Blair Witch for me. The revelation that it was all fake and the ditching of the map.
The Grudge creeped me out and yes I'm with the OP, there was something very creepy about the blair witch project, I was really able to put myself in their position and felt fear.
I thought the Exorcist was kinda overrated, I got bored during the movie My personal favorite is The Shining. the best of the past 10 years for me are in nor order The Mist, The Descent, Saw I, 28 Days Later, and 28 Weeks Later.
Well, respectfully, that's your opinion, but it's always found in lists of best-ever "horror" movies on multiple sites, it's categorized as horror by Netflix and Blockbuster, and it has elements of horror. But yeah, probably not pure horror like some of the others.
Its such a broad umbrella, but a lot of the asian horrors of the last decade or so have been good. Not just fantasy type horrors like Ringu but the gorefests of Miike. As for English films, I like the Omen.
ditto. it practically started the whole "lets rip off japanese horror" genre but did it with great acting.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original one that came out in the 70's not that piece of garbage remake...
Seeing Halloween 2 this past weekend made me appreicate the original. It was the first flick to freak me out and still had me thinking about it a few days later.
