Ok...We have now seen Badiane play in the flesh, and people should be able to give much better scouting reports than we had based on clips. Positives He is fast...really, really fast. He plays extremely hard, and is one of those guys whose energy stands out. He is athletic, he has springs, and he seems to be aggressive. For much of the SL game tonight he was the only guy on the floor for the Rockets to show anything. He has nice form on his ft shot, with great elevation on the release...He hit an outside shot. He has a good feel for the boards. Negatives He is raw, and his energy some times takes him out of position. He is aggressive with the ball, and on the boards, but he is not assertive enough demanding the ball or establishing position, he shifts out too quickly. He is also quite light, and will need to beef up to bang with the big boys. Overall, so far, it's too early to make any conclusions, but he stood out tonight. Of course, that's not saying much. Will have to see what he's like when he settles down, but there is definite ability there.
I agree with you 100%. He does have a good feel for the boards which is going to make him a good rebounder.
Give it up! He will never suit up as Rocket. Aside from Yao & Nachbar how many oversea guys the Rockets have drafted and suited up and seen action during the regular season. It is like the Rockets never had a draft pick. He will be another Albert Berdett (check spelling). Albert who?? excatly. Former UT defensive, rebounding, raw talent, 6'10, ect... Sent overseas to develope and still over there. Rockets will trade Bandaine rights to some desperate East coast team. out!
Aside from Yao & Nachbar...HAKEEM THE DREAM. Are you sure about that? I hope you are not right. I think JVG and his staff will like guys like Hawkins and Mobley and Posey and Badiane. They all play hard and hustle.....
Bottle, did you see the game? I don't think there is any reason to think that he can't be a good rebounder and valuable contributor in a year or two. You could almost feel the hunger and determination in the guy.
The Suns guy was right, there is no comparison between BadMan and Amare. Cue the old school Adam West Batman track for his "game day" song... "DaNaNaNaNa..DaNaNaNaNa... BadMan!!!" Pow! Blam! Splat!!
hey glynch, were you that guy who on draft night was saying you had a gut feeling or something like that that this kid Malick Badiane was going to be the steal of the draft for the Rockets? way to go with your gut mannnn.
Bottle...I don't get the thinking. Judging a player based on where he comes from, and an organization's history with players from other places makes little sense to begin with...and of course you would be hard pressed to find an organization which owes more to overseas players than the Rockets, what with Hakeem before and now Yao. Base your evaluation on the player and I'll respect it. Make blanket statements which treat a player as a manifestation of some sort of organizational bias, especially when their is no basis, and it comes across like so much hot air. pcheung...I actually wasn't even really thinking Bat Man, although it works, I was thinking more like Ali..." I'm a Baaad Maaan!" I did think of it before I posted it...like a football to the groin, it works on so many levels...
I wasn't the first, but I immediately agree with the poster who said they had a premonition. I certainly feel that way now. I think you need to keep this kid here in Houston. The three players he reminds me of are: 1) Darrius Miles, 2) Hakeem as as a youngster in his first year at U of H, Though he doesn't seem to be as much of a shot blocker, he was going after a lot of them and I think altered some shots 3) Stoudamaire, though he isn't as strong, he runs the floor just as well or better. I'm not saying he'll be as good, but the quickness and intense energy is what makes me see the comparisons. I've got a feeling that perhaps he is just getting better so quick that some of the souts just missed on him. Hey lightning struck the Suns last year, why not the Rokets this year? I wonder if Heypartner who was playing the odds on Badiane saw the game and if he still feels so negative toward him.
I wonder if the front office prefers to send him overseas simply b/c they will have to try re-signing him to an expensive contract in 2yrs if he makes the roster now. They might figure that if he's only 19 and gonna sit on the bench anyways, might as well let him develop in Europe and then get their money's worth when he's ready to log pt.
Okay, guys, I'm just about done here for the night, but a few thoughts ere I leave... Do you guys remember when Carlos Rogers would play well for stretches? The Bad Man reminded me a bit of that tonight. A few others he looked like too, but that jumped out. Don't knock it, when Rogers was on, he was a player. the Bad Man probably will play bigger than Carlos eventually, but he looked like him tonight, when Carlos was playing hyper... Did anyone notice his hands? I don't remember him missing or having trouble with a pass, and on the boards he seemed to get what he got his mitts on...It's more of a general impression than an actual observation, but I taped the game, and will take a closer look menyana. But, as many suggested, the thing that jumps out at you is that this guy just flies...the announcers might have noticed it if they weren't busy planning the next Laker Parade, but it sure jumped out to me. There was one time where Bad Man dunked the ball, and then was 1st man back on defense...Now granted this says as much about his teammates as it does him, but he really can fly, and what's more, does. The next two things to really focus on are: Can he sustain the energy play with more minutes? Some guys play like gangbusters for 15 minutes, but give em 20 and the energy their game depends on is too spread out, and they're just ordinary, and second, was tonight just a flash?
Overall, a very nice debut for Badiane tonight. He was obviously nervous in the first half, but came out and played a very solid 2nd half, finishing with 14 pts and 9 rebounds. Played the last 18 minutes of the first half and showed no signs of fatigue until the last minute of the game. At one point during the 2nd half, he had a huge dunk, which he missed, but was fouled. He knocked the Laker who fouled him to the floor and Patrick Ewing was laughing on the bench for the next 5 minutes. Malick is raw, but he is strong and as he showed tonight can shoot it from 10-15 feet away from the basket. No word yet on how the Rockets are leaning, but if he average 15 pts and 10 rebounds during the SPL, don't be surprised to see him stay in Houston, Patrick is a big fan of his. More to come after tomorrow's game.....
I'd like more clarification on this. Is Badiane stayinga possibility? I've heard that it is for sure that he will be going back for at least a year.
I like the evaluation Mac as usual and its pretty accurate. When looking at inside players, one of the first things you want is hands, instincts and footwork. Those are 3 things that you can't really teach a big guy. Hands is the most important one. Cato,Dampier,Rogers, and guys like that have hard time handling the ball which either causes to's or lost chances under the goal. Malick caught the ball clean, like Ming and finished plays. His game speed and intesity also stuck out to me. The guy hustled , ran and really put on a good show. If Eddie or Taylor played with this same type of speed or explosiveness, they could gt more easy buckets. If nothing else, the rockets can keep this guy on the il, like sa did Jackson and then next season after seeing what Taylor and Griffin brings us, make a decision. I liked the pick draft night and really like it now. Its only summer league, but he seems like the anti Griffin and anti Taylor.
sounds a lot like a young bo outlaw, which would be just fine with me. Better yet, maybe a budding Dennis Rodman, with some offensve talent, without the headcase. Either way, every team needs a pure hustle guy to fire up everyone.
Macbeth, If the Bad Man cat give us 15 minutes of high intensity effort then he is worth keeping. That is more than what Collier and is the same as what Cato give us. He can be our Najera/Pollard type player.
Rileydog, I like the Bo Outlaw comparison. I think he has a better touch than Bo, especually from the line where Bo is Brutal. I woke up thinking that Kenon Clark is the best comparison, though Badiane is a little thicker even at 19 than Kenon. I think that though Carlos Rodgers has the same size and can also run well, this guy is a little tougher and more high energy. I do think that he can fulfill the Najera, Outlaw role of energy off the bench for the front line, probably even next season. He definitely has mid first round potential. A steal at 44!!! Next game the opposition will be ready for him, but I think that, like Najera and Outlaw, that type of hustle is always hard to contend with, especially when combined with speed.
LOL...well I wouldn't mind having The Bad Man as our Bo Outlaw. I hope he isn't sent back and stays here and gets to work out with Patrick Ewing and Eddie and Yao and Mo and Cato and all of our other big men staff. If Eddie doesn't improve or doesn't please JVG...Badiane could replace Eddie! Probably not though.
