So Saturday night I was in San Antonio with some co-workers and they got bored watching me watch the Grizzlies/Mavs game in the hotel room, so they decided to go to a club. Never been to one, so I didn't know what to expect. Anyways we were bought alcohol beforehand because one of the guys claimed we'd have a lot more fun. So even though I was planning to have my first alcoholic beverage in the company of my closest friends I succumbed to peer pressure and drank a bottle of Smirnoff Black, cause hey, who doesn't want to have more fun? I couldn't even taste alcohol so it was all good. I figured the "buzz" or whatever you're supposed to get would set in due time and I'd have a jolly old time there at Club Antro.

So I was mildly put off by the fact that half-naked women were bouncing around while horny drunk men stared up at them with beers in hand, but I got up and danced for a few minutes. Then I realized I wasn't really *dancing* because I wasn't grinding with some guy in the middle of the dance floor. So feeling like an idiot I just sat down at a table and listened to the music and watched people come about as close to sex as the thickness of their clothes would allow. I was sitting with my friend Alex talk/yelling over the thumping music and got a whiff of his beer and immediately felt the alcohol churning in my stomach.

Well I ended up made it about an hour in the club before I threw up my guts and was laying in the parking lot beside the car clutching my stomach. I seriously just kept thinking over and over in my head, what is the point of drinking? Being in an alternate state of reality for a short period of time and then having a terrible headache the next morning? All the people at the club seemed to be drunk and loving it, but is it only so they can get in on with hot boys and girls on the dance floor?

I thought alcohol made you happy or giddy, not sick and dizzy. Maybe I drank the wrong thing. Is Smirnoff bad or something? Do you drink socially or cause you like the taste or cause it enhances your fun...? I've been wondering about the appeal of alcohol for awhile now but now that I have consumed it I don't see how its such a popular thing to do. I'm pretty sure last night I had my first and my last drink. Or maybe watching all the groping turned me off to it...

    Why do people drink?

I used to drink, but then I realized it was stupid. After watching most people get drunk, it led me to believe that most people get drunk because they can't deal with the realities of their own life. Plus alcohol is empty calories.

But I think some other Legend of Drunken Masters can better answer this question.

I still have no idea what people get out of drinking alcohol other than well drunk. And I have no idea why you'd want to be drunk. I have no real interest in losing control of my mind/body to the point I'll look or act like an idiot in public. It's one reason why I hate going to gatherings where all people do is drink "to have a good time". I've also heard that it helps you loosen up before you talk to women and vice versa. So it takes you being under the influence to talk to people? Sounds about as stupid as boobs on a bull to me.

Of course, all this is just my opinion, of course... :D

Unfortunately,I fall in the category of people who rely on drinks as a social lubricant...It's probably not the best thing, but I think as long as you keep things under control and don't get completely messed up everytime you drink then it's not a big deal. Please tell me you didnt get sick off of just a few smirnoff ice....

Smirnoffs are pretty weak, but then again it was your first time. The body initially rejects alcohol the first time so you're generally more likely to feel like crap after the first time. You just have to learn your limits and you'll start to feel more comfortable.

Drinking is mainly a social tool for most people. It loosens you up and generally allows a lot of people to just temporarily lose their inhibitions and just go with the flow and do whatever. For some that loss of control isn't comforting but if you manage your drinking it really shouldn't be an issue. You can become more social without going nuts and then puking your guts out later. (you can get the buzz and not get drunk out of your mind)

I myself dont really drink at all but for introverted people like myself it can really open you up.

Just wondering. The top one would make most people sick. The bottom one wouldn't. Alcohol, like any drug, is a ticket to an altered state. Drug = change.
You use it to kill inhibitions, that come from our primal, tribal background, where rejection by your tribe meant certain death to your genes. That's not really useful anymore. We don't have to live in tribes of 50 - 100, jockeying for social status and competing for limited genetic opportunity. The world today is one of billions. We have unlimited abundance, unlimited opportunity. We don't have to use a drug to short-circuit those 1000s of years of cultural programming, but it is a time-tested ticket. In moderation, alcohol will give you the gift of gab and an easy, familiar approach. In excess... you can no longer function, speech is slurred, movement and comprehension are processed through a dirty filter that makes everything awkward. But, in just the right amount, everything sparkles with wit and joy. So, ultimately, that's why. People want to feel that sparkle, they want to be that spark, in the interaction, and it takes some courage to put yourself out there, and start it up, make things happen.

Yea, pretty sure. Just tastes like an energy drink, too. I didn't think I had consumed enough to get sick, but that was before I threw up my dinner. :(

Why are you awake? I woke up after reading my girl to sleep, and I get the knee in the ribs around 2:30. Ugh. My cat is noisy, too. She likes to eat RIGHT NOW, and can be very insistant.

I know you're pretty young, finals, so I'll just say don't sweat it. You'll have opportunity to enjoy all that. Just appreciate you. You are enough, you are wonderful. There's a well of experience inside everyone, that you can bond with or not, as it is useful and pleasurable. So, all those people around you, are fun, to the extent you allow them in your boundary, and access to your time, your emotional and physical resources. Your boundary is how you define yourself - I like cats or dogs, I am this or that. And this will change, it is not fixed, but some things stay with us. So, you enjoy *different* people, but they come into your resources only to the extent you allow. Don't put a hole in your boundary where people can reach in and take your time. :) Have a door, where you can choose to let some in, and keep some bad bargains out :)

The sexual display doesn't have to be frightening, either. It's a normal part of human, animal experience. Adult males and females interact sexually. It's ok.
We have different standards and guides for behavior, but that's a choice. We all learn our path in our own way.

It's a social lubricant. It makes people relax with the initial drinks. I think it's because you couldn't taste the alcohol in the smirnoff so you downed it pretty quicky. It needs around 15 minutes to kick in, and several months for your liver to get used to it.

The whole club atmosphere does give that side of alcohol a bad look. Alcohol's a depressant and lowers high level thinking (inhibitions), so inside a club is summer time where everyone...

One thing I learned from my mandatory driving school is that alcohol's structure is chemically similar to ether. Ether's a poison that numbs and dulls the body, and it was interesting that the instructor artfully played alcohol as a similar yet lighter poison.

I never really got into drinking. First, I really don't like beer. Somtimes, if I haven't had it in a long while and I get one off tap then it might taste good to me. I usually drink mixed drinks: scredrivers, Long Islands, and 7&7's or malt liquor like Smirnoff. I still don't drink that often, maybe once every 2 months.

I gave the drinking/partying scene a try when I got to Texas State but found it r****ded. I been drunk and I've puked my brains out. I don't like being drunks and really don't understand its appeal. If you're somewhere where everyone is drunk and you're not you realize how stupid it is. It's really annoying to be sober around a bunch of drunk r****ds.

My old roommate and his friends were like this. They'd say "wanna get ****ed up tonight?" and I found that completely r****ded. I have nothing against drinking but intentionally getting drunk off you're @$$ is moronic. They make light of it and call themselves "Alchoholics in training". They're already there. My roomate would drink 8-10 beers every night. Consequently he stayed up late, slept in, never went to class and got put on academic suspension as quic as possible. I came to realize about a month ago that his current roomate, who is a jazz trumpet player, is completely incapable of playing sober. He actually has to be intoxicated to play well. That's a horrible dependency if you're trying to be a professional musician.

i dont drink either and never understood the appeal of getting drunk, just to get drunk.

its like you are an outcast if u dont drink alcohol, especially in college. I really dont give a damn, my body doesnt handle alcohol well, so if it means i dont get invited to the next frat party then so be it.

Yes, no one here drinks and everyone thinks it's dumb.

I knew a guy once who drank two Smirnof Blacks but I haven't seen him since.

I used to drink a lot but I have toned it down. Like most people have said, alcohol tends to loosen you up so you aren't as reserved as you might usually be. I drink with meals now and never more than two drinks and no matter how much I drink I NEVER drive.

It seems like there were two problems. One was the acahol, but the other was the club.

Those club scenes aren't for everyone. I never really enjoyed them, even when I was successful at meeting girls there. It just wasn't my idea of fun, and I found that I had little in common with the girls who 'loved' to go to them.

The good thing is that you found out you don't really like clubs. Go again, some time down the road and see if you still don't like it. Then write it off your list of activities.
