I would love NOTHING more than for Lima to get better and see him in our rotation again--the summer of 99 was the stuff dreams are made of...Besides, I've met him several times and he was personable and funny. I think it was the Casa Ole' comercials that really did him in...

So, maybe Pena wasn't such an inspired selection by KC after all.

    It gets better:

Lima has been called up again and will pitch for the Royals on Sunday!

    Lima Time is back.

KANSAS CITY -- It's Lima Time in Kansas City.
Veteran right-hander Jose Lima, who signed a minor league contract with the Royals this week, was on his way to Kansas City Saturday and is expected to start Sunday's game against the Giants.

"He is probable for Sunday," Royals general manager Allard Baird said.

Lima had been scheduled to start for Triple-A Omaha on Saturday, but Kyle Snyder's back stiffness convinced the Royals to move him back.

Lima had been pitching independent ball for the Newark Bears when the Royals picked him up.

He had a 7.77 earned run average for the Tigers last year and is hopeful of regaining the form that made him a consistent winner for Houston in the late 1990s.

"The difference between his fastball and change-up was five miles per hour last year," Baird said. "He has the difference back to 10 to 12 miles per hour, which is where we want it to be."

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (ESPN.com news services) -- The Kansas City Royals planned to call up pitcher Jose Lima from Triple-A Omaha to start today against the San Francisco Giants.

The Royals bought Lima's contract Wednesday from the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League, where he was 6-1 with a 2.33 ERA in eight starts.

His last stint in the majors was last year with the Detroit Tigers, going 4-6 with a 7.77 ERA.

Lima was an NL All-Star in 1999, when he went 21-10 with the Houston Astros. He won 16 games for the Astros the previous season. The right-hander is 63-74 with a 5.14 ERA in nine big league seasons.

Lima is slated to take the start of Kyle Snyder, who is hampered by back pain.

The Giants will try to move a season-high 18 games over .500 when they conclude the three-game interleague series.

San Francisco has won 12 of its last 17 games following Saturday's 7-4 victory. The Giants got 6 1/3 strong innings from Damian Moss and a two-run single by Rich Aurilia and a two-run double by Edgardo Alfonzo during a four-run seventh.

Aurilia had three hits, while Ray Durham extended his career-high hitting streak to 16 games.

Barry Bonds has homered against 25 different teams and in 30 different ballparks. He entered the series having homered in four straight games and has 18 this season, but may get the day off today. Bonds has not played in six of San Francisco's 10 games played on Sundays this season.

The Royals lost for the 17th time in 25 games as Mike Sweeney hit a two-run homer and Angel Berroa added a solo shot.

Jerome Williams (0-1, 5.74 ERA) makes his fourth start. He joined the rotation when Kurt Ainsworth was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a back injury.

He pitched in Tuesday's 5-3 setback to the Chicago White Sox when he went five innings and gave up two runs and five hits.

Information from The Associated Press and SportsTicker was used in this report.

Remember how he predicted he'd win 20 before the season started. Lookin back on that, damn, you gotta think what were the chances of that actually happening. 21-10, how'd that happen?

Confidence + pitching in the dome 1/2 the time. He was the prototypical Dome ("where fly balls go to die") pitcher. The BUS got in his head & he never recovered, even after going to the best pitchers park in baseball (Det).
