I posted this before the Amen draft, when it seemed to be the absolute consensus that it was Wemby 1, Scoot 2, and that both of them would be superstars.
As an outsider, those seemed like fixable things, so I think there was reason for hope, especially since he seems to have the talent and athleticism. He also interviews extremely well, his draft interviews were terrible, then it seemed like someone talked to him and he was saying the right things. I had a ton of hope for him, he has not grown at all, maybe even regressed.
That’s why people compared him to Jaylen Brown who wasn’t necessarily a good or willing passer his first couple years in the league. At least he avg 2 asst in college while Cam had less than 1 asst per game. Cam has always played the same way since college and probably prior in terms of strong aggressive driving to the paint and threes with no playmaking touch.
I was beyond thrilled when we got jalen and very sad when we didn’t get scoot. Let’s face it, we all suck at evaluating prospects and it’s silly when people take it so seriously.
There’s nothing wrong with having an assessment and be wrong but the dumbest thing repeatedly on this site is when fans: -make stuff up not based on facts -judge without no substantial evidence -speak as a matter of fact without knowledge -condescendingly insult players again with nothing to back up but mere judgement In this case Amen decided to forgo his senior year to join OTE, which was a league composed of several players of different experiences including guys who had played professionally overseas or guys who had commitments to a college but decided to play a year first with OTE like Dillingham. But stupid fans kept saying Amen played against high schoolers or 15 yr olds when he was himself a high schooler. There were U17 guys and FIBA guys in that league as well. And we saw Amen’s abilities and potential on full display including his playmaking and defensive intensity.
Too many people say “I know so and so is going to be a bust”. Rather than “I think he’s a bit over rated”. Nothing bad about being wrong from time to time, we all are.
Since we're pulling out the receipts, just wanted to bring this argument back up. The "Amen will be useless because he can't shoot" crowd was very loud leading up to and even after the draft. Weird how we haven't heard that take from folks for a while...
People act like shooting is the end all be all especially when the other skills are on full display with so much potential for greatness. Rondo and Jason Kidd had great careers not being great jumpshooters or three point shooters. Neither of them had the explosiveness and consistency to get to the paint and score or make plays like Amen or the defensive acumen.
