Starts tonight at 9 PM ET/8 PM CT. I've never been to HistoryChannel.com before now. What a lush site! Discussion to follow. Don't tell me I should have put this in D&D...
The History Channel site is not that lush. Yet another lie propogated by the far right. I'll try and watch the show, but it wil have to be really good to compete with one of the greatest movies ever made... Republic. I like the sound of the word. It means people can live free, talk free, go or come, buy or sell, be drunk or sober, however they choose. Some words give you a feeling. Republic is one of those words that makes me tight in the throat. The same tightness a man gets when his baby takes his first step, or his first baby shaves, and makes his first sound like a man. Some words can give you a feeling that make your heart warm. Republic is one of those words.
This documentary sounds very interesting. It promises to present differing views of the Alamo siege and those involved...views other than the ones popularized by the movie. There is an excellent article about the documentary in today's H-town Chron Fishwrap: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/2298307 I've got a recording session tonight, but I will be taping the documentary.
I have a bad feeling that this is going to try and show only the dark side of all those involved on both sides. The History Channel specials always seem to concentrate on the negative means to the ends of what ever topic they are presenting.
Thats why some great people and events in history are such a sham. Nobody knows the truth of many people or how cruel and unrighteous they really were. Presidents, generals, cowboys, all of them. If we had the same media support back then as we do now, can you imagine how differently Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, Grant would've been viewed throughout history? Just look at how harshly people look upon Clinton for being with an intern. Its nice to see how people really lived and know what kind of person they were as a whole, not just a few brave days of it.
What's the scoop on Lincoln? The dirt on Washington, Jefferson, and Grant is pretty straightforward IIRC.
Well, you know what he was hiding under that big-ass hat of his, don't you? That's right... WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION!!!!!
This thread reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Lisa finds out about Hans Sprungfeld... "I only have two questions. One, where's the fife, and two, gimme the fife"
Well, if it's true, I don't mind learning negative things about our history. One of the contraversial things going around is that Crockett actually surrendered. Maybe they'll touch on that.
Those who fought at the Alamo were real people with real lives. They weren't superheroes. They were just regular guys fighting for something they believed in. I'd rather know the history, warts and all. History isn't about fairy tales and hero worship. It's about real men and women. Glossing over their flaws in favor of folklore reduces them to caricatures, and it dishonors what they really endured. Historians rarely trust future generations with details or proper context, in fear that it would spoil the storyline or mar their "characters." But it's the details -- and flaws -- that makes their stories so remarkable. See also: True Hollywood Story.
