This is not a thread to debate if abortion is morally wrong or if it should or should not be legal. I just want to point out few simple facts to everyone that wants to make abortion their key reason for choosing a candidate. It does not matter who you vote for. Abortion is legal and will remain legal. Roe vs. Wade happened in 1973 when we had a Republican president. Since 1973 we have had 23 years of a Republican president and 12 years of a democratic president. Republican nominated Supreme Court justices dominate the supreme court by a count of 6 - 2 including the Chief Justice John Roberts, who was nominated by George W. During that time Republicans have addressed this issue less and less. They give lip service about what they claim their views are on abortion so they do not alienate a large part of their voters. The point is that they have had plenty of time to do something about abortion and abortion remains legal. Abortion will continue to remain legal regardless of who is president. Politicians will tell you what you want to hear. Do you really think George H and George W are so against abortion when Barbara Bush supports a woman’s right to choose? Obama is not evil and all you have to do is listen to John McCain if you happen to be a supporter of him. John McCain has said at his own rallies that Obama is a respectful, family loving, Christian man. Not that being a Christian should matter since our country was founded on the belief of freedom of religion. All the rhetoric of Obama being evil or a terrorist really does nothing but show ones ignorance.
Oh, I'm sure some will jump in and argue right or wrong but really I could care which side of the fence anyone is on because it is and will remain legal.
I agree that no overturn will happen but that not how fights happen these days. They take small bits and pieces.
I would suggest even if it's overturned, abortion will not be illegal except maybe in a few states. At least half the states will have it legal. And the ones bordering those states will be pressured to make it legal - you're going to have wealthy people simply crossing the border, and with the much wider news media now, you're going to hear all the stories about the poor people doing manual abortions. The pressure will seriously grow to make it more and more available. I think the whole notion of fighting abortion by trying to overturn Roe v. Wade is seriously misguided. The much better strategy would be focusing on the demand side.
there is a 32 page topic on this, not far down the D&D front page. everything from what side of the fence you are on, moral, religious, legal and parental beliefs, what is an embryo and what is just a pearl necklace, burning hospitals, jumping out windows wth jars of sperm and a whole lot of other thought provoking debate. another thread just seems pointless. Every angle has been debated.
Another ignorant comment. Roe vs Wade failed because it set no boundaries when it came to abortion. There is not a firm line when it comes to abortion in regards of whether you are labeled pro choice or pro life. Using abortion as a method of birth control is plain sick. On the other hand, you will find a vast majority of people who believe all the other "what if" scenarios such as rape, incest, birth defects, ect ... understandable. Roe vs Wade will never be overturned to include those. I would image the number of people using abortion as birth control to be a much smaller number than all the other "what if's", so therefore, its not much of a reason to fight. To get both sides to agree there is a gray area will never happen.
I have no idea how this is relevant to anything I posted. There were illegal and unsafe abortions going on before Roe v. Wade. If it is overturned, those same things will be occurring again. It has nothing to do with whether people support or oppose it or if it should be happening - it's just fact of what would happen.
And the answer to your question (which DOES follow the point of this thread) is no...no...and no. With all of the Republican presidents and Republican nominated Supreme Court Justices over the past 35 years and they have all been unsuccessful at over turning Roe vs. Wade.
It's not for lack of trying - it's just that they've been unlucky with a few selections (Souter turning out to be a moderatel in disguise really foiled 'em, Kennedy wasn't as much of a hardliner as anticipated either.) These days though with the Federalist Society echo chamber in full control of right wing judicial selections - wouldn't be too difficult to tip the balance.
