Anybody watch Imus this morning? One of his guests was the author of a newly released book "Flyboys." Sorry, I can't remember his name. He is also the author of "The Flags of our Fathers." His dad was one of the men who raised the flag over Iwo Jima. Anyway, his new book tells the tragic tale of 8 American flyboys who were killed by their Japanese captors immediately after Iwo Jima fell. They were on another island about 250 miles from Iwo Jima and were being held captive by the Japanese. As the news of the fall of Iwo Jima spread, the Japanese on this other island (Chim-chim Jima or something like that) decided to kill their POWs and ready for the battle with the Americans. So they summarily beheaded these 8 flyboys. After the war, there was a secret military war crimes trial which convicted the Japanese commanders who ordered the the beheadings. This was all done in secret to protect the families of these flyboys from the grisly truth of their merciless death. And the story takes another twist. There was a ninth flyboy shot down. As his raft drifted toward this island, the Japanese waited by to pick him up off the beach. Instead a submarine surfaced and rescued the ninth flyboy. You've all seen the pictures of this rescue. His name: a 20 YO George Herbert Walker Bush who went on the become the 41st President of the United States.
