    yao ming
    jim jackson
    kelvin cato
    cuttino mobley
    boki nachbar

Padgett is a free agent, thus can't be protected. Looks like the 7th grader did some bad research.

Those were the current free agents as of the day after Valentine's Day. Once this current season ends, you'll be able to add quite a few more to the list.

Is it too late to turn this thread into a respectable expansion draft thread? No? Oh well, but I just wanted to mention one thing I was reminded of by the Chron article today. That the Bobcats have to take 14 players and can only take one from each team. That means almost half the teams in the league will lose one player. I had been thinking that if we left our cap albatrosses out there, there was no way the Cats would take one, or at least that we'd have to pay a pretty penny to entice them. Now, I'm thinking it is much more likely, because they have to take players and other teams' available rosters will likely be as bad as the Rockets'. Now, losing Taylor's or Weatherspoon's contract doesn't seem nearly so impossible.

Rockets under contract for next year:
    Steve ($11.3 Mill)
    Mo T ($8.5)
    Cato ($8)
    Spoon ($5.9)
    Cat ($5.9)
    Yao ($4.4)
    Pike ($2.7)
    JJ ($2.5)
    Boki ($1.5)
    Adrian Griffin ($0.8)

-Charlotte must select at least 14 players
-Charlotte may select only one player per team
-Charlotte may later waive a player and remove their salary from their cap (whoever, they must still pay out the contract)
-Charlotte's salary cap in 04-05 will be approximately $30 million.
-Other teams may offer up to $3 million and one draft pick as enticement for selecting/not selecting an exposed player
-Charlotte's managment is on record that they are not interested in taking bad contracts off of other teams' hands, due to the financial burden of paying them after waivers.
-Charlotte wants to be a player in the FA market, and would prefer to stay below the cap.

==> While most teams are eager to unload contracts on Charlotte, do not expect more than one or two deals to be made. 3 mill plus a draft pick (especially a pick after the #4) is no where near enough compensation for the Bobcats to take a Penny Hardaway ($30.4 million remaining) or a Maurice Taylor ($27.1 remaining).

==>Charlotte would prefer to find size in the expansion draft if they can, and would be open to taking an overpaid player for compensation if:
    • the player makes close to the 3 million mark (up to ~$5 mill)
the player is near the end of their contract (2 years or less remaining)
the player is a PF or C
An example of a player that would fit this scenario would be Jahdi White ($5.8 million, one year remaining) in Phoenix (hoping to clear space for Kobe), or Dikembe Mutombo in NY ($4.5 million, one year remaining).

==>Again, keep in mind that the average player salary for Charlotte, assuming they field a 15 man roster and spend to the cap will be $2 million. That's less than half of the average player salary in the NBA. If they take and keep just one player making $10 million a year, the average salary for the rest of the roster would have to be $1.4 million. Trust me when I say they will be frugal.

I would expect Adrian Griffin and Maurice Taylor to be left unprotected, with the understanding that Taylor makes far too much for them to be interested.
