We had a discussion in the chat, puedlfor, VOR and me, and we came up with a suggestion that will kill all the confusion about the common draft.

It is simple, and can not be used to hide players.

This is our suggestion for next offseason

Next offseason come draft submission time we will not submit players. We will let The Cat pick them (a group will pick from The Cat).

This is the way it goes:
4 players are protected by you at first.
1 player is picked by The Cat to go to the draft.
1 more is up for protection before The Cat selects one more player for the draft.

You can trade up and down all you want. The players you have when the pick is going down is what The Cat will select from. You can hide a man as your 12th man - he still can be selected as the first to go in the draft. Simple, easy, no need to discuss about the common draft again.

Now all we need to do is agree about that this could be the way to go.

To repeat everything in VOR's words. Next seasons draft will use a new format. No matter what transpired throughout the year and playoffs, each GM will be able to protect 4 players. They do not have to be starters, just the 4 players they least want to loose. After that Cat will look over every roster and take what he deems to be the best player that is unprotected off of each roster. This player is now in the draft pool. After this player is selected you get to protect yet another player. Then Cat will select what he deems to be the best player now to be your last players selected to the draft pool.

    Thoughts?

The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?

Well, I think this is a good setup, because it allows for no hiding of players...but it seems to me that this will severely reduce the amount of talent that will get input to the common draft. One starter, of the poorest quality, and one bench player, more than likely the 7th man off the bench.

I guess I just feel like this will reduce the lower tier teams ability to crawl out of the cellar... especially since we won't have another rookie draft for a while.

So, basically, it would be the 5th and 7th best players on every team?

Sounds fair. I personally would prefer a 3-2-1 system instead because it would provide better players, but why quibble? Overall, a good compromise.

That show was Jordy La Forge's best work.

Okay guys, I've got a slight modification to this format that I'd prefer over what's so far been presented.

I don't mind the first part of protecting 4 players and then letting Cat choose 1. It's the 2nd part that I really don't like b/c we have very little control on who on our bench gets selected. We just get to protect 1, but I'd like to have the final word as a GM on who goes next. I suggest that we protect 1 player, then cat chooses 2 players, and we pick the player out of those 2 that go in the draft.

The reason I say this is b/c this 4-1-1 format will clearly hurt the team's with depth the most. My team has serious depth, so that's why I'm representing that perspective. With the way that these rules are set up, a team could lose 2 players in the same position which would SUCK REALLY BAD.

Anyway that's what I propose as an addition to this format.

    1) We protect 4 players and Cat chooses 1.

    2) We then protect another player and Cat chooses 2. We then choose which of those 2 players go in the draft.

    Feedback's appreciated...

It looks like you're basically arguing for a 4-1-2 system, BGM, assuming that the Cat selects your 7th and 8th best players. Except there's an added level of complication because it goes back to the player to make a decision.

I am against any move that results in a weakening of the common draft, since we're going to have plenty of seasons with no rookie draft to even things out. And this idea sounds complicated, to boot. If we want a simple system, what about just protecting 4 (or 5) guys and letting Cat pick the next 2? Easy as cake.

I actually like BGM's version. It will give the GMs some more control, and it actually helps the not so deep team more than the deep ones as they will have a bigger drop from guy #7 to guy #8 while the deep teams get to keep the one they like best of 2 with simular quality.

I have no problem with BGM's idea, but that is because I think my team is one of the decent ones. If I were one of the lower tier teams, I think I would have a problem with anything that weakens the talent in the common draft, which this would certainly do.

    against BGMs amendment

this is an issue that should NOT involve the GMs in any way. as soon as you allow us to choose you open teh door to squabble.

cat will not pick all your SFs he will take 2 players. he might go easy on the weakest teams, he may go hard on my, its pretty fair, because we then get to collectively do the same to him

also as far as rules. there should be ways to eliminate collusion in trading, and all teh BS **** going on in trades. if anyone posts **** like good will, or keep camby out of teh draft in the official trade thread there should be punnishments. that behavior is WRONG, and makes me suspect much more than i will post here

this activity better stop, and Cat you better make sure it all stays legit, or im gonna have to trade my irritation for heaths dim whit, and i will offer up don nelson to keep Battier out of the draft..
