Long article but a very interesting read http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=jamfest83&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab1pos1
The 2nd half of that game was like a slam dunk contest. I remember thinking that there was NO WAY anyone could stop UH. Then came the next game...
i was there with my father. i remember seeing Billy Packer in the Renaissance Hotel lobby right before the game.
And, unfortunately, we learned the only thing that could stop Phi Slama Jama was...Guy V. Lewis. I'll never understand why he went conservative the last 6 or 7 minutes of that game. A very, very, very close second to "The Comeback" as the most disappointing moment in Houston sports history.
ANDERS (discussing Houston's offense in 1983): "When I drop a dime to the Big Swahili, he better lay it in the hole." always thought it was Franklin who said that. i saw the first half at my (then) in-laws house on long island, then drove back to the city at half-time. i caught the end of the game, but missed drexler's dunk and most of th 21-1 run.
I was watching it with a friend. We were dumbstruck at the second half explosion... just sat there without saying anything watching it all unfold. What a game!
yeah...thanks for the reminder!!! the Bills-Oilers crushing blow doesn't even come close... good times until the end though.
Olajuwon powered in four dunks in the final five minutes alone, capping a 21-point, 22-rebound, eight-block effort. ____
