fast forward to sunday's loss: example 1A, no? granted, it was a disappointing loss - disappointing because they were in position (several times) to tie the game; disappointing because they weren't overmatched and proved they could hang tough on the road; disappointing because they looked really, really good in stretches. but disappointing enough to throw in the towel and concede the season?... typical of what we can expect from guys like justice - they don't write what they know (otherwise, it'd be a blank column), they write what they think the fans want to hear. and THAT'S disappointing...
What sucked the most was Fred Bennet dropping that gift wrapped INT-TD that would have tied the game.
I am always ready to pile on a hate Justice thread. I started one on a Texans message board and it went on for 13 pages.
I don't agree with Justice most of the time, but he's doing his job - getting people to read and talk about his articles... even if it is negative towards him.
that was biggest non-play of the game. iirc, rosenfel threw his pick on the ensuing drive. huge turning point.
no; he's shamelessly appealing to his readers by writing what he thinks they want to hear. it's lazy. he'd engage far for more readers - and fans - with an actual take; not LCD-baiting tactics. but he's long ago lost interest in that. or never had the ability in the first place.
His job is to help sell papers......nothing more, journalists have no more credibility than bloggers. I mean honestly, it is just an opinion of a fan with a pen, or rather keyboard. DD
I've already stated my solution, and if the texans don't want to hear me out, that's on them. Grrr! 3 hours of meditation on tuesdays, bypassing the NFL's mandatory dayoff. It's all mental. On justice: I like richard. If the team is winning, he will promote the team all over the nation. The entire western media respects him. Not many people like front runners because sometimes, well most of the times, they turn out to be traitors. But what can one expect, when many civilians in our city are front runners themselves?
he's not a "fan" - he's a journalist. he has a large readership and at least some degree of responsiblity to use his skills, status and access to get as close to the truth as possible; not echo the knee-jerk reaction of fans.
DISagree! The Houston Comical Sports section is an embarrassment to our great city nationally. Other cities' columnists get invited onto nationally syndicated programs because of their insight into the local team, or--God forbid--into the sports scene nationally. Our very own RJ does indeed get invited, but only because he is an entertaining smartass.
I disagree here, as well. A front runner is just as bad as a Dick Justice, true. But RJ isn't being "forthright" or "honest" or "courageously taking the team to task" or "holding the team accountable". (All of the above are examples of how I've heard RJ's brand of drivel described.) RJ is doing precisely what Ric says he's doing. And it's despicable and deplorable. It's embarrassing. RJ sucks, and so does the Chronicle sports section. SUCKS. Hard.
Awesome excuse. Can I have his job and salary then? Because, without his education and without his access to players, agents, management, and other journalists, I can write the exact same drivel he does. I'd love to rub elbows with the folks he gets to rub elbows with, draw that paycheck, and not be required to do any actual research, but rather just lazily and freely opine like some guy at a water cooler. So, you'd argue that there's no requirement on a columnist to write anything with quality or that remains at least partially faithful to common sense?
I don't read or listen to Justice. I was a little bit surprised to watch Channel 13's show last night and see Bob Allen slam Reeves. He basically said "you know I've never been a fan of Reeves. HE NEVER TURNS AROUND AND LOOKS FOR THE BALL!!!" Bob has always been the Texans biggest cheerleader so seeing that was actually kind of funny.
its not an excuse, his job is to give an opinion based on facts. the facts, the texans lost. the facts, they have only beaten bad teams, and one mediocre in miami, he gives his opinion based on those facts.
I'd like to point out that you guys provide the disincentive for him to improve. Ultimately, the sports media, like anything else, is a corporate business enterprise. They respond to money. The way to force improvement is by not reading the product - if people are still reading, it doesn't matter if they like or dislike the article because they are using the product. Controversy sells just as well as quality writing. And despite how much we all hate Justice's writing, you guys keep reading it, so as far as management is concerned, he's doing a good job at the #1 objective.
But his job is to sell papers, and if his being "knee jerk" sells more papers, then he is doing his job. The newspaper industry is dying, they are lost in an informational society which gets it's news on the web and on TV far more frequently. The only reason I get the paper is to have something to read while taking a dump....whenever my wife lets me install a keyboard and monitor in there....I will be in hog heaven. He is doing his job, and by you guys talking about him...it is proving my point. DD
It IS an excuse. His job is to give a responsible opinion based on ALL the facts. Not flip-flop week after week like a fickle prebuscent schoolgirl, cherry-picking whatever emotionally charged "facts" happen support his current disposition.
a responsibe opinion and damn near fact is that when you lose the turnover battle you lose games. that's the first point he makes in his column. do you disagree?
