U.S. putting 'French' back in fries?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- To get international help to rebuild Iraq, Congress may have to eat some French fries and French toast, according to Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.

Saying it is time to put aside differences with France, the Texas Democrat circulated a letter on Monday urging the U.S. House of Representatives to put back the word "French" in fries and toast on House cafeteria and dining hall menus.

Lawmakers ordered them renamed "Freedom" fries and "Freedom" toast last spring, reflecting anger at France for its opposition to the U.S.-led war to topple Saddam Hussein as Iraq's president.

But times have changed, Jackson Lee said, and now the Washington is trying to get France and other members of the United Nations to contribute money and troops to help stabilize Iraq and rebuild its devastated infrastructure.

"President Bush is now urging that all parties put aside 'past bickering,'" she said in her letter.

"A symbolic start to that effort" would be reinstating foods on the House menus "with their traditional 'American' names -- French toast and French fries."

Rep. Bob Ney, head of the House Administration Committee, ordered the changes in March.

The Ohio Republican took the action at the suggestion of Rep. Walter Jones, a North Carolina Republican.

I'm glad she is spending her time REPRESENTING MY DISTRICT in Washington with this. She is just an idiot. This is NOTHING MORE than an attention grabbing stunt, much like everything else that lady does.

    LOL!

I am glad that Congress has such important matters like that to take care of and that SJL is going to personally spearhead that effort! This is even more amazing considering that I didn't even know that there were some people who actually went through and renamed those items! Double LOL on that one!:D

Ah. Did you all take part in trying to vote someone else beside Sheila Jackson Lee into her position? If not, maybe next time you should. :D

    Just doing my part. ;)

No. Deep-frying in oil is also called french frying (as opposed to regular frying which is actually sauteeing). French fries are called such because they are deep-fried.

On the thread, I don't know which is more ridiculous: changing the name of french fries in the first place or posters complaining about someone trying to fix it.

    LOL

What's worse -- that she wants to add "French" back to fries, or that it was removed in the first place?

    Ah, I love politics!

I think what's worse is the monumental waste of time and money that has been devoted to this issue when there is so much other work that could be done. (oomp says as he reminds himself that HE started this thread...)

I thought that French Fries got their name because the cut used to get them that shape is called a "French" cut??

Like "waffe fries" and "curly fries"...

Forget it, they should just eat potato chips and pancakes...

I guess so. I guess she's got to hold the fort down for idiocy, now that Cynthia McKinney is off in Europe telling the Euros how 9/11 is our fault and that Bush knew all about it, but did nothing. That hurricane name controversy was about the funniest thing I'd heard in a while.

Sheila Jackson Lee is a disgrace to the institution that is Congress. Her ego and attention whoring are beyond belief. I really don't know who is to blame: Her ignorance or the voters' ignorance in electing such an embarrassment to office.

Does this look like someone fit to serve in Congress? This picture was taken on the floor, believe it or not.

I can see that as a possibility as well. Perhaps Mrs. Valdez would chime in with her culinary expertise (and perhaps a quote from Gastronomique) on the subject.

Either way, the point is that the 'French' part is a reference to the method of preparation, not the country of origin. I don't know how one could claim to have invented it anyway; it isn't exactly a difficult concept to come up with.
