Texas will be the first state to reopen starting with public parks and retailers NEXT WEEK if they can do curbside or home deliveries - but schools will remain closed

    • State parks will reopen on Monday and retailers can reopen on Friday April 24
    • The retailers will only be allowed to reopen if they can do at-home or curbside deliveries so people will not be allowed inside stores or businesses
    • Texas has a population of 29million but only has 17,000 coronavirus cases
    • By comparison, New York City has 8million residents and around 120,000 cases
    • Gov. Greg Abbott said he would continue to monitor the outbreak
    • President Trump said on Thursday that the country could reopen on May 1
    • However he is not responsible for actually implementing reopening plans
    • That is down to the governors who must also pay for the restart of the economy
    • Learn more about how to help people impacted by COVID

    I don't like it, Bill.
Can Houston, San Antonio, RGV, Dallas, CC, El Paso and Austin all secede from Texas? All blue and purple

Since states and busn will ref Phase 1,2,3... P3 is close to being back to fully normal. They are at the WH link below.

    1) the fed gov is hand off... it's all up to the state to do literally everything, including funding i would assume
    2) absolutely nothing about testing or enhanced tracing by the fed gov (we could be seeing some state with no testing / enh tracing plan and many different implementations by diff states)
    3) basic mostly vague guideline that is open to interpretation
    4) P1, 2, 3 has the same criteria (repeated over and over some period of time); if that doesn't sound right, it's because it isn't
    5) expected shameful political branding of a crisis

In theory, you go from P1 to P3 within 28 days. And you can bounce around the phrases forever.

BTW, Trump speed at work: a few days ago it was i have abs authority to now, the state essentially have abs authority :)

I don't have a particular problem with this - they aren't opening much. We're literally talking about small gatherings in state parks and curbside retail. You have to test things out at some point and unless they plan to wait until there are no cases at all, there will always be people suggesting waiting longer. Try it out for a week or two and see how it goes. Parks and curbside retail are easy enough to close again if things get worse, and neither is going to cause an out-of-control outbreak. It would be different if they were immediately opening restaurants or big venues like sports arenas. Use these next few weeks to get more testing online and dip your toes into re-opening, and then evaluate again in 10-14 days.

The original goal of social distancing was to slow the curve to ensure we don't overwhelm hospitals and to buy time to let hospitals prepare. No one is assuming that this virus will be completely gone or have a vaccine for before re-opening society. Our hospitals aren't anywhere close to overwhelmed, so while no one will say it, practically speaking, you actually theoretically want a few more cases so it can start cycling through society and you start building some of the herd immunity where you can. That will save lives down the road. Flattening the curve completely is the opposite of what you want - it just means everyone will still be susceptible whenever you do re-open things.

If TX keeps not making many measurements, then by the numbers, it will be “fine.” But everyone will at least know somebody who “ came down with somethin or other and got real dadgum sick.”

kinda sad and worried: my elderly parents were letting me order their groceries for them via Shipt, but thanks to the governor’s announcement, mom’s all fired up to go back out grocery shopping now and won’t accept my pleas.

what can you do? Just hope for the best. Hope the heat kills enough virus.

Lol wtf is up with that press release - pretty much all states allow deliveries and pickups on pretty much ****ing anything, whether it's Amazon or Postmates or just the store of whatever.

I bought a goddamed backup sump pump battery today via curbside pickup. It was a
pretty low spread likelihood event, and I wore a face covering. Plus the kids got to take a car ride. That's a big deal these days.

Texas isn't" first to open" jack **** nothing. That press release is one Boomer sack of **** groin massaging fatter, older boomer sack of **** who is responsible for thousands dead and 20 % unemployment.

Nothing is opening you cant go into galleria and buy something since its all curbside buy and no one is going to buy a louis vuitton bag over the phone and pick it up curbside.

This is some weird way of opening without really opening.

Those of us with half a brain will stay inside and wait for medical experts and data.

This feels like a 'for show' move and most will continue in quarantine since rules arent much different. Crappy ass vape stores and cell phone stores will be open and they were open anyway.

Call me back when galleria opens fully. This is faux open to own the magas

I'm not sure Abbott's rationale, but I think it's one of the few things the state directly controls and manages (ie, he can't force stores to open). And social distancing really only works if the population is on-board. No one wants to be arresting/fining people for violations. These protests around the country will continue to grow as people get more antsy - this is a way to throw those people a bone and say "see, we're on your side and re-opening things".

We have a low number of cases, but we have one the lowest testing rates in the country.

Also not a real public transit system outside of buses which serve the lower class (people who don't have cars).

trump is insane. His tweets calling for some of the states to be “liberated” were read by fools in Texas. CNN was showing video from different state capitals where the fools were demonstrating. In front of our State Capitol, were dozens and dozens of them carrying signs in the drizzle, many with children, none that I saw wearing masks.

They had a shot of Congress Avenue looking towards the Capitol and there were a huge number of cars carrying people that didn’t want to get wet, many, like the idiots at the Capitol, very likely from out of town. A couple of hundred cars, from the looks of it, in a line facing the historic seat of our state government. They were probably honking their horns, a guess on my part, because there was no audio. In their obvious ignorance, some no doubt carrying the virus.

Our governor welcomes them. The lunatic in the White House lying to the country encourages their behavior. It’s madness.

It's like they say... a peeing section in the public pool. We'll be right back to where we were a month ago by midsummer. Only then, Trump and many governors just won't have the appetite to close down the country swiftly, if at all. The way this is looking now, we will easily eclipse the 4,200 deaths we saw yesterday by August.

I'm not certain what we've accomplished up till now, other than using up PPE, killing people, and further eroding our standing in the world.

You can't allow states to behave as if they're an independent European country when your country is the size of all of Europe. A state like New Jersey, for example, that delays reopening and acts responsibly will simply be overwhelmed that much faster once they reopen. The way to manage this would have been to shut down all states early, impose strict stay at home orders, and delay reopening until we had the necessary gear, testing, and knowledge to deal with an outbreak.

One day, hardcore capitalists are going to understand that people can't buy **** when they are dead.

Has Texas even hit its peak yet? Seems like reopening for this state should be at least another month away.

Abbot probably hopes to kill enough folks in the big cities which are all Dem majority to increase the GOP chances in the November elections. In some places like West Texas it is hard to find any people to actually social distance from.

Well, as others have said, when you look at what Abbott is actually proposing, it's not that big a step.

But for another, yeah, I agree, and it's not even dead people. People who are really really sick and get their entire families really really sick, for weeks at a time, don't buy much other than cough syrup, and they miss a hell of a lot of work. If they drive trucks or teach school or staff hospitals, you're SOL.
